They’re depicted as heroes, public figures who possess superhuman skills and talents. They can put on a cape and fly like Superman, shatter backboards with extraordinary strength and raise 20,000 fans to their feet with the just a lift of a hand.

There is only a week left for All-Star voting and one Boston Celtics fan wants to make sure his favorite player is on the team. It's not Kevin Garnett. It's not Paul Pierce or Ray Allen. It's not Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins either. It's Brian Scalabrine. For the past two years Brett Schneider has been campaigning for Scal on Facebook. The 19-year-old from Westchester, New York has been a fan of Scalabrine since his days with the New Jersey Nets. Impressed by his work ethic and dedication, Schneider thought it was time for him to get recognition.

Leon Powe looked as if he hadn't slept for weeks. It had been two days since the birth of his son and he was running on fumes. Despite his exhaustion, he posted a then-season high 10 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes in his first game back. His son may have kept him awake at night but it was the newborn that motivated him that evening on the court.

“I think he's earned it,” Doc Rivers said. “I think he's ready for it.” It's always nice for a player to hear words of encouragement from his coach, especially when minutes are scarce. But Boston Celtics guard Gabe Pruitt gets pep talks straight from the top.

Just a month after winning the NBA title, the Boston Celtics championship celebration was cut short.   This July, James Posey opted for money over a shot at defending the title and signed with the New Orleans Hornets. The Celtics unwillingness to splurge on a 31-year-old sixth man dropped them from dominating to vulnerable. No Posey, it seemed, meant no repeat for the Celtics.

Any Eastern Conference team with serious playoff aspirations will have to go through Boston. And the Celtics are proving early on this season, that’s one big roadblock. Just over a month into the season the Boston Celtics have already defeated the projected top contenders in the East. They followed up an opening night win over the Cleveland Cavaliers with a pair of victories against both the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors, as well as blowout wins over the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.

It was a situation Paul Pierce has been in countless times before. The Boston Celtics were stuck in a double-digit deficit and turned to their captain for salvation. Like he has done in so many games over the last 10 years, Pierce put the team in his shoulders and led them to victory.

Five games in seven days. The Boston Celtics' upcoming schedule is a demanding lineup that includes a pair of back-to-back contests and matchups against postseason contenders. The long haul began Sunday when they traveled to Detroit to take on the new-look Pistons. While it is early in the season for such a lengthy stretch, the Celtics welcome the tough competition.

No one said defending the NBA title was going to be easy. The Boston Celtics didn't say it. The coaches didn't say it. The critics didn't say it either, many of them citing age and complacency as the spoilers of a second title run.

While it's hard to see past the historic turnaround and 17th NBA title, it was only a year ago that many basketball pundits were questioning the depth of the Boston Celtics bench. There was no way of knowing that veteran journeymen like James Posey, Eddie House and P.J. Brown would come up with clutch shots during the playoffs or that a young talent like Leon Powe would emerge in the Finals.

It has been four months since the Boston Celtics captured the NBA championship and the players can still smell champagne on their shoes. The memories of celebration are still fresh on their minds and the magnitude of their accomplishments still leave many at a loss for words. A lingering air of victory welcomed the Celtics back home when they played their first preseason game at the Garden this weekend. Returning to the place where they won it all was a long-awaited trip for the team.

J.R. Giddens wasn't sure what to expect from Bill Walker. Even though he had seen him play plenty of times in college, the two rookies had never crossed paths in the NCAA circuit. It wasn't until this summer when they were both drafted by the Boston Celtics that they finally met and Giddens got to see the other side of his new teammate. "We got to see each other from afar but never really hang out with each other," Giddens said. "There's a difference between Bill Walker on YouTube and hanging out with him in person."

The separation was obvious last season when the Golden State Warriors came to Boston. On one side of the locker room, Baron Davis and Monta Ellis studied film together. On the other, Andris Biedrins and Mickael Pietrus compared game notes. In the middle, Patrick O'Bryant sat at his locker. Alone. By now it's no secret that O'Bryant was a never a fit for Don Nelson's Warriors squad. His style of play didn't mesh with the coach's up-tempo system. In just two disappointing seasons, the former first-round pick from Bradley was dubbed a bust.

At first glance this year’s Media Day was no different than the last for the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen sat at the podium and addressed a swarming herd of microphones and cameras in their training facility in Waltham. They talked about expectations, playing for a title, and the importance of staying hungry. The trio agreed there was a target on their backs. But then something different happened.
