Kendrick Perkins was right there with LeBron James as he drove to the basket on a fast break. By the time James got to the hoop, Perkins was poised to stop him from scoring. He threw his body into the sprinting star, drawing a flagrant foul and strong reaction from the sidelines.

Ray Allen didn’t approach Game 5 against the Heat any differently than the rest of the games. He arrived at TD Garden at 2:45 in the afternoon, just over four hours before tipoff. He followed his usual game-day routine — change clothes, stretch, shoot. Nothing more, nothing less. Even though he had uncharacteristically missed two critical free throws in Sunday’s Game 4 loss to the Heat, Allen didn’t let the slip-ups alter his strict pregame regimen.

The young ballplayer made his way over the to gym with his father and brother, the same trip they had taken every weekend for nearly a year. They arrived before 10 a.m. to secure a spot on the sign-up sheet. It was ideal to face the first two or three teams — guys got tired out by the sixth or seventh game — and this was the best pick up basketball around.

Kevin Garnett has a reputation of getting into his opponents’ heads. On Tuesday, the Celtics did the job without him.

The Game 1 altercation between the Celtics and Heat has left both teams with another objective besides containing their opponent — they’ll also have to contain their emotions in Tuesday’s Game 2.

It may not have been how the Celtics envisioned it at the start of the season, but as the playoffs approach, they’re driving forward with their championship ambitions — regardless of the starting point.

Michael Finley walked into the Celtics locker room and tossed a towel at Marquis Daniels. “You’re still my rookie,” he said with a laugh. Daniels pulled the towel away from his face and grinned, “I’ve still got rookie rollover minutes.”

It doesn’t matter if the Knicks came into the game with 49 wins or 49 losses. The Celtics biggest problem was not their opponent. In many ways, they beat themselves.

The Celtics only watched the first quarter of their loss to the Grizzlies, but that 12 minutes of film was all they needed to get the message.

Before Wednesday night’s Celtics-Grizzlies game, autographed boxing gloves from Manny Pacquiao adorned the Celtics’ lockers. They were a gift from the world-renowned boxer, whom many players on the team met following their championship in 2008.

Rajon Rondo had a way of sneaking up on the 76ers.  At first, it seemed like the Celtics' 96-86 win over Philadelphia Friday night would be a shooters’ match between Ray Allen and Elton Brand. The veterans jumped out to hot starts -- Brand scored 12 points in the first quarter and Allen was right behind with 11.
Jessica Camerato
03/04/2010 - 1:07am
Paul Pierce was right about two things: 1. It didn’t matter if the Celtics won big just as long as they won at home.   2. If they held their opponent to less than 40 percent shooting and 100 points, they would come out on top. On Wednesday night, they did both.
Jessica Camerato
02/27/2010 - 7:23pm
Blowing the lead to the championship-contending Cavaliers was bad. Blowing the lead a team that came into the Garden with five wins was worse. “I’ve got nothing to say,” Kevin Garnett proclaimed after the game. “I feel disgusted.”
