Before the Findlay Prep boys basketball squad set off for the 2009 National High School Invitational, Michael Peck wanted to prepare this team for the most important tournament of the year. He organized a team of veterans, including former pros, to scrimmage his players, show them the ropes, and get them ready for the long road ahead.

Chico Walker saw a different side of his nephew this Fourth of July weekend. It wasn’t a three-time All-Star shimmying on the court. It wasn’t the centerpiece of several legal troubles, either.

Felix Doubront’s intentions were clear as he walked toward the mound at Lowell's LeLacheur Park late in 2007. He wasn’t supposed to be there — not with all of his potential and expectations for success — and he was determined to prove it. “I am going to kill this league and then go up again,” he vowed to himself.

LAS VEGAS -- There was plenty of time for Gerald Green’s new reality to sink in.  It began with the flight from Houston, which made stops in Washington D.C. and Moscow before finally reaching Krasnodar. Then there were the long bus rides, where it eventually all hit him.  “I went from being inside the green room, almost a lottery pick, to now I’m in Russia,” he told WEEI.com. “It was a shock to me.”

“Shrek & Donkey” wasn’t the only duo formed on the Celtics this past season. During the Celtics’ quest for a championship, Tony Gaffney and Oliver Lafayette were on journey of their own. The two rookies were trying to make it in the NBA. “It’d be tough having to do this alone,” Gaffney told WEEI.com. “It’s cool doing this with somebody else who’s in the same situation as you.”

There were rumors of trading the pick. This year’s draft was not considered to be as deep as years past, sparking doubt that the Celtics could snag a legitimate contributor with their first-round pick, No. 19 overall. And when looking ahead to an uncertain season, every acquisition is significant.

With 60 players selected every year, the NBA draft sparks memories of “Remember that guy?” “Whatever happened to him?” Here is a look back at the Celtics' draft picks and draft night acquisitions over the past five years. 2009 No. 58: Lester Hudson, Tennessee-Martin Seasons in Boston: 1 (2009-10)

Ron Artest has been here before. Not the NBA finals, but that doesn’t matter. He’s been to Boston. He’s played against the best in the East, and knows the difference 3,000 miles can make. He’s learned it’s not always about finesse, that a performance doesn’t have to look smooth to translate into a “W.”

LOS ANGELES -- There were 58 fouls called in 48 minutes, but there was one that stood out from the rest. It was whistled just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter and it was number five … on Kobe Bryant.

It’s been there the entire season, quietly hanging above the practice court as a constant reminder of the ultimate goal. There are no words on it. No pictures, either. But the empty canvas tells the story of a team on a quest for greatness.

Kendrick Perkins was right there with LeBron James as he drove to the basket on a fast break. By the time James got to the hoop, Perkins was poised to stop him from scoring. He threw his body into the sprinting star, drawing a flagrant foul and strong reaction from the sidelines.

Ray Allen didn’t approach Game 5 against the Heat any differently than the rest of the games. He arrived at TD Garden at 2:45 in the afternoon, just over four hours before tipoff. He followed his usual game-day routine — change clothes, stretch, shoot. Nothing more, nothing less. Even though he had uncharacteristically missed two critical free throws in Sunday’s Game 4 loss to the Heat, Allen didn’t let the slip-ups alter his strict pregame regimen.
