As the pregame parade began, as the precession of musket men, fife and drum corps, and the flags of every NHL team entered Fenway Park from the center field bleachers, the kids kept playing on the small rink created near the main show. Five kids in Bruins jerseys, five kids in Flyers jerseys.

Despite the lopsided game being played out in the Bruins' favor at TD Garden Wednesday night, there still was plenty of hockey drama in the air: Which of the Winter Classic participants would enter Friday’s game with a bigger margin of victory?

The Bruins’ final road game of calendar year 2009 was one to forget. The B’s showed plenty of late game resolve but not a whole lot of luck as they dropped a 2-1 contest to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. (Recap.) Alex Tanguay scored late in the first period and Martin St. Louis delivered a goal late in the second, while Mike Smith made 15 of his 31 saves in the third period to lead Tampa to the victory.

This one was far from a classic. Returning to game action after a three-day break, the Bruins shook off some early doldrums to take a 2-1 victory over the Panthers Sunday in Sunrise, Fla.

12/24/2009 - 1:12am
Fast and furious was a pretty good way for the Bruins to head toward Christmas. Moving the puck swiftly and efficiently, the Bruins scored three goals in a 68-second span of the first period, building an insurmountable cushion in a 6-4 victory over the Thrashers Wednesday.

At just the right time, the Bruins were able to cross some important items off their holiday “to do” list while skating to a 2-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday. (Recap.)   Boston needed offensive production from its top-line forwards. Patrice Bergeron and Marco Sturm delivered just such spark with third-period goals.

Phil Kessel was a mess.                    Facing his former team for the third time in just over two weeks, the ex-Bruin continued to seem a bit unnerved while taking on the Boston defense Saturday. Kessel turned the puck over to the Bruins, seemingly on demand. He hesitated. He backed down from contact.

There was no reason for Tim Thomas and the Bruins to be punching any walls after this one. Yes, Thomas yielded goals to Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane in the opening rounds of the shootout resulting in a 5-4 Chicago Blackhawks victory over the Bruins, Friday. Yes, the loss was the third in the row (0-2-1) for the B’s.

Zdeno Chara could sense it. The Bruins captain jumped out of his normal composed shell, barging all over the rink and playing deliberate hockey.

The Bruins had plenty of chances, but Frans Nielsen had the one that mattered the most. Despite launching 17 third-period shots at Dwayne Roloson, the Bruins dropped a 3-2 contest to the New York Islanders Saturday when Nielsen scored a breakaway goal just 24 seconds into overtime. Nielsen took a pass from Blake Comeau after the Bruins turned the puck over just inside the Islanders blue line. After stumbling momentarily as he moved into the Boston zone, Nielsen recovered to sweep a backhand shot past Tim Thomas.

The skilled Toronto forward wilted in the moment. With his team in the midst of a startling rally that had the Bruins giving ground and grasping for answers, the high-profile Maple Leaf lost control and washed it all away. No, Phil Kessel, did not crash and burn. But Toronto center Jason Blake sure did.

Kessel-Mania I turned into a Marc Savard smack-down. Savard scored three goals, Marco Sturm, Zdeno Chara, Mark Recchi and Johnny Boychuk added single tallies and Tuuka Rask made 31 saves as the Bruins returned to winning hockey with a 7-2 drubbing of Phil Kessel and the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday.

At least they didn’t wear those striped jerseys. The Montreal Canadiens completed a seemingly never ending celebration of their 100-year history by scoring early and often in a 5-1 victory over the Bruins at Bell Centre, Friday. After lauding the pride and accomplishments of a century of Les Habitants hockey, the here and now Canadiens relied on a hat-trick by Mike Cammalleri and a 37-save effort by Carey Price to send the Bruins to just their first regulation loss  in seven games.

No more overtime. No 4-on-4. No extended shootouts.

12/02/2009 - 2:25pm
When all the numbers are crunched, the salary cap figures massaged and the statistics examined, the Bruins' seven-year deal to keep center Marc Savard in Boston certainly has the hallmarks of a sound economic move. The reported $28.05 million deal, with an annual cap hit of about $4 million, left the Bruins and fans with plenty to smile about Wednesday. The bottom-line-conscious Bruins did not overpay, and Savard got a well deserved long-term deal.

Tim Thomas was down. Way down. But not out. After yielding an ugly, back-breaking, game-tying goal in the final seconds of the third period, Thomas went to work in yet another overtime contest for the Bruins Saturday.

If it was not an altogether Black Friday for the Bruins, it certainly was a gray one. After announcing that punishing equalizer Milan Lucic will be lost for up to a month with a high-ankle sprain, the Bruins came up just short in a 2-1 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils in a “it sure beats shopping at the mall” matinee at TD Garden.
Graig Woodburn
11/26/2009 - 9:18am
The game was tied in the third period, a possible perfect road trip and first place on the line. Tuukka Rask was just kicking it in the Bruins goal. As Boston worked on a power play with the chance to grab the lead, Minnesota Wild penalty killers whisked the puck the length of the ice toward Rask.
Graig Woodburn
11/21/2009 - 7:49am
For several weeks, while mending a broken finger, Milan Lucic was simply limited to skating in an empty rink without a puck. As boring as that practice may have been, Lucic’s ability to forcefully skitter without the puck paid big dividends Friday as the Bruins took a 2-1 overtime victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Graig Woodburn

Maybe the Bruins should just see themselves as the first NHL team to play a 62-game schedule.

Tough choice. Would you rather lose a scoreless game in shootout, or a high-scoring game on a colossal defensive breakdown?

Seemingly about to surrender the first goal of the game in the opening period Thursday, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas did what he does best.
