You can see where this is going, right? It’s starting to become so clear. We are just three weeks into the two-month war of attrition that is the Stanley Cup playoffs, but a nice black-and-gold picture is starting to develop.

Let’s just cut to the chase. Here are three things that every hockey fan in New England has become painfully aware of during the last three weeks: The Bruins can’t hold a lead. The Bruins can’t win a shootout.

When was the last time you saw a Bruins forward pounce on an ill-advised pass by the opposition in the defensive zone and turn it into a goal? When was the last time you saw a Bruins defenseman carry the puck through center, swiftly break down the wing and feather a pass for a teammate to swipe into the opposing goal?

The Bruins’ pursuit of Atlanta Thrashers explosive forward Ilya Kovalchuk may have hit an impasse that will require some further negotiations to overcome. A league source with direct knowledge has indicated to WEEI.com that in order for the Bruins to obtain Kovalchuk for the balance of the season, the Thrashers are demanding the Bruins part with the first-round pick in the 2010 draft they acquired from Toronto in the Phil Kessel deal.

LOS ANGELES — On a day when they lost some more key players, the Bruins still managed to look like a team that is getting stronger. After 35 minutes of hockey Saturday, the B’s were well-positioned to end a three-game tour of a California on a highly positive winning note.

El SEGUNDO, Calif. - Tim Thomas had been there and he had absolutely no mercy for Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov. With the game on the line in a shootout, Thursday, Bruins mammoth defenseman Zdeno Chara skated to the slot and unleashed one of his plus 100-mph slap shots from about 20 feet in front of Nabokov. The puck rocketed past Nabokov into the net and boomeranged back out. Chara’s cannon blast from short range was simply too overpowering.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The warm California sun helped thaw out the Bruins offense, but it didn’t do much to change the team’s recent fortunes.

Skating Saturday afternoon without two of their top centers, the Bruins looked like a team trying to find its game at both ends of the rink. The New York Rangers scored a goal in each period and Henrik Lundqvist steered aside 29 shots, including a penalty shot by Marco Sturm, to take a 3-1 win over Boston.

01/08/2010 - 1:43am
A tough week for the Bruins grew a little bleaker Thursday as they were presented with the question of how they would play against one of the best teams in the league while skating without their two best centers and two of their top six defenseman.
Graig Woodburn
01/06/2010 - 12:36am
The Bruins were ready for this one. Responding to some sharp criticism from their coach and the loss of one of their top players, the Bruins unleashed an energetic first-period attack to take a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place Tuesday.   Blake Wheeler scored twice in the opening period, David Krejci and Mark Recchi also added early goals as Boston built a four-goal advantage in the opening 14 minutes of the contest.
