This isn’t an overreaction to seeing Matt Bartkowski have a productive first period Friday night, but an exploration of just how far the Bruins are willing to bend as they embrace a more offensive back end:
DJ Bean
11/15/2013 - 12:32am
Chad Johnson needed that.
DJ Bean
11/13/2013 - 5:05pm
The Bruins paid Tuukka Rask $56 million to be the $3.5 million Tuukka Rask, as all they could have hoped for were eight repeat performances of his 2013 season.
DJ Bean
11/11/2013 - 6:39pm
From looking at the standings, you wouldn’t guess that the Bruins are just turning a corner as they try to hit their stride and get all of their new guys comfortable in their system.
DJ Bean
11/10/2013 - 2:03am
The Bruins are two winning third periods separated from the early season malaise that plagued them, but while some areas have improved in order to get the Bruins some wins, it’s been more of the same from Boston’s first-liners. That’s been a good thing.
DJ Bean
11/08/2013 - 6:15pm
Two games, three goals. So far, so good for the Carl Sodereberg - Chris Kelly - Reilly Smith trio.
DJ Bean
11/08/2013 - 12:46am
When it’s worked, it’s been exciting to see the Bruins’ young defensemen join the rush as Boston’s back end receives a slight makeover in the post-Andrew Ference era.
DJ Bean
11/07/2013 - 4:11pm
Claude Julien is right. Tim Thomas did not singlehandedly win the Bruins a Stanley Cup.
DJ Bean
11/06/2013 - 12:55am
To paraphrase Dave Grohl, one last thing before I quit writing about Tyler Seguin until January: What happened Tuesday night was really surprising.
DJ Bean
11/04/2013 - 1:31am
Whatever was going on during Tyler Seguin’s one-goal postseason wasn’t the reason the Bruins traded him.  That postseason was a reason, sure, but it was just one of the reasons why Seguin’s days in black and gold came to an end after just three seasons.
DJ Bean
11/03/2013 - 1:18am
The Bruins aren’t very good right now, so forgive the lack of serious concern.
DJ Bean
11/01/2013 - 1:13am
Things were looking pretty rough for Carl Soderberg, and they got worse before they got better. Still, the takeaway is that they did indeed get better, as Soderberg scored his first NHL goal Thursday and showed that he’s earned the trust of his coach.
DJ Bean
10/31/2013 - 1:23am
On June 15, 2011, Josh Beckett threw a one-hitter against the Tampa Bay Rays.

10/29/2013 - 10:08pm
Last season, the Bruins tried to upgrade Nathan Horton’s position with Jarome Iginla. It didn’t happen.
DJ Bean
10/27/2013 - 1:14am
It’s way too early in the season to know how good a team the 2013-14 Bruins are, but the guess here is that after 10 games, they’re just scratching the surface of what they can be.
DJ Bean
10/24/2013 - 11:41pm
Patrice Bergeron’s line is looking different these days than the Bruins had planned, so it sure is a good thing that David Krejci’s line appears to have things under control.
DJ Bean
10/24/2013 - 1:02am
No matter how many games John Scott is suspended, it will not impact the Sabres as far as wins and losses go. That should tell you all you need to know about what Scott brings when it comes to actually playing hockey.
DJ Bean
10/22/2013 - 6:03pm
As is often the case, Milan Lucic put it best.
DJ Bean
10/22/2013 - 12:18am
Defensemen are moving in and out of the Bruins' lineup, but it wouldn't be possible without Dennis Seidenberg moving around.
DJ Bean
10/20/2013 - 2:34am
For two of the past three years, we in the local hockey media have smirked at the poor guys and gals on the baseball beat as they’ve posted lineups of regular-season baseball games when the whole city was focused on the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals.

SUNRISE, Fla. – Tim Thomas has spoken.
DJ Bean
10/16/2013 - 5:34pm
SUNRISE, Fla. -- It's a game that once upon a time seemed so unlikely to be played: The Bruins against … Tim Thomas?
DJ Bean
10/15/2013 - 12:26am
The Bruins are 3-2-0 through five games. As Tuukka Rask put it, they're "not awful, not great, not bad."
DJ Bean
10/13/2013 - 9:32am
It was awfully, awfully early to be worried about Loui Eriksson.
DJ Bean
10/11/2013 - 9:40am
Jarome Iginla already was disliked enough in Boston when he played his first game at the Garden since turning down a trade to the Bruins. Then he went out and busted up Nathan Horton's shoulder and left Boston's best postseason winger banged up for the entire postseason. What a super mean guy.

Minor Details Ep. 98: Youth without the transition - Rusney Castillo and Brock Holt

How can teams acquire players who are entering their primes without having to live through the potentially massive transition of prospects coming from the minors to the big leagues? The Red Sox have two such case studies. The signing of Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo represents one effort to acquire a player for his prime years for whom the transition to big league-caliber competition might not be turbulent. The episode also features Brock Holt, the one rookie who played at a consistently high level for the Red Sox this year. Holt explores some of the distinctions that might help to explain why he did not experience some of the struggles that characterized the seasons of Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr.
