It took just one dreadful year for the Colts to put themselves in position to have decades of elite quarterback play.

Well, so much for optimism. After a couple of weeks of Ross-and-Rachel-esque “will they, won’t they?” the NHL spoke for both sides Friday and gave the answer fans were probably expecting at this point: They might, and if they do, it won’t be for a while.

Last week, for a time at least, it seemed like hockey was on its way back. As we near the one-week anniversary of the day the owners appeared to extend a real offer for a new CBA that could save a full 82-game season, the outlook isn’t that promising or clear. What is clear is that this is a big week for the NHL, and with no negotiations currently scheduled, it’s hard to see where things will stand a week from now.

Forgive the lack of details, but here’s an anecdote: After a Bruins home game, Tyler Seguin was busting Shawn Thornton’s chops because he had set the enforcer up for a scoring opportunity but Thornton blew it.

BOLTON – As Tuukka Rask fielded questions prior to the Bruins’ annual golf tournament Monday, a reporter asked when he thought the season might start.  “My guess is as good as yours,” Rask answered. “I really don't know. Some people say December, some people say November, some people say January. Who the heck knows?”

It's common for negotiations to go down to the last minute. With 10 days to go until the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement expires, both commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive Donald Fehr have their arms crossed and haven't sat at the negotiating table since Friday. When they’ll talk next is anyone’s guess, as reports have suggested they don’t have any further negotiating sessions planned.

When it comes to negotiations regarding a collective bargaining agreement -- and over the last two years, sports fans have had to deal with plenty of them, thanks to the NFL and NBA -- it's understandable the average fan doesn't have a major interest in the nuts and bolts of the whole thing. They want games to be played, and if they have any interest in the negotiations at all, they just want to understand them.

Forget the Steven Stamkos comparisons for now. When it comes to Tyler Seguin’s future, you want to look at Jeff Skinner.

Call it complacent, call it too comfortable or call it unheard of in today's day and age. The Bruins could -- and very well may -- enter the season without a single veteran pickup. GM Peter Chiarelli likes what he has, and assuming he wasn't throwing the media for a loop on Tuesday, that's the way it's going to be.

When will Daniel Paille have an offseason? He may have one every year, but Paille’s certainly kept busy in each of the last two summers. The last offseason was jubilation, and this one could be doom and gloom.

With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire on Sept. 15, the talks between the owners and the NHLPA (led by Donald Fehr), could be lengthy. The owners decided to open with a joke.

Tyler Seguin will always have a special place in his heart for the NHL draft. After all, it was just two short years ago that the draft defined the then-18-year-old Plymouth Whalers star center. Now, he’s an NHL All-Star and a Stanley Cup champion.

The late, great Terry Kath once sang that he wanted to be free. There aren't many Bruins who can identify with that, thanks to what Peter Chiarelli has cultivated in Boston.
