Ryan Spooner is the next argument player in the Bruins' storied history.

For the first time in the NHL, Torey Krug is cold.  Well, statistically he’s cold. After bursting onto the scene with four goals last postseason and six goals through the first 15 games of this season, the 22-year-old is dealing with something of uncharted waters.  Krug has gone the last 21 games with just two goals (seven assists), which leaves him with a still-impressive eight goals on the season but obviously is a step back from his earlier pace.

Teams need their best players to perform in order to win games, and that’s more true for the Bruins now than ever given all the forwards they have missing from their lineup.

WILMINGTON -- If there's any silver lining of the Bruins having as many injuries as they've had, Peter Chiarelli said this week, it's that they've gotten a chance to see how some of their promising young players stashed in Providence fare at the NHL level.

12/20/2013 - 3:50am
Brad Marchand hasn’t been very good this season, but by no means should his days in Boston be numbered.  Peter Chiarelli did a very rare thing for a general manager to do Thursday morning when he came out and said he wasn’t trading a player that nobody thought he was trading.

Tough, physical teams need to walk the line in order to be at their best, but at this moment in time, the Bruins might be best served to just take a couple of steps back from it.  With players dropping like flies due to injury, illness or suspension and the Bruins not exactly having painted themselves in the most flattering light of late, now wouldn’t be the best time for them to see any more consequences of crossing that line.  In other words, there is never a good time to make a bad decision on the ice, but this really isn’t the time.

Shawn Thornton is really sorry for what he did to Brooks Orpik, but he is appealing his punishment. Please think for a minute before jumping to the easiest conclusion.

Fighting is the most controversial thing in hockey right now and there might not be a team in the midst of more heat than the Boston Bruins.

Before the season, Claude Julien insisted that Milan Lucic was a good enough skater to hold his own on bigger ice in the Olympics.  Last month, he reiterated that stance. Perhaps it needed reiterating given that Lucic is known more for being a big body than fleet of foot, but if you’ve watched Lucic this season, you’ve probably seen Julien’s point.

The Bruins will take the wins as they're getting them, but at this rate they're going to enter the playoffs with a third of their lineup represented by ECHLers.

The biggest problem with Saturday night’s game was that Shawn Thornton went berserk and attacked a guy.

MONTREAL -- Bold take: The Bruins defense could have done without Johnny Boychuk getting hurt.  This season had been trying enough for the Bruins defense without Boychuk’s injury Thursday night. The squad really didn’t need it.

WILMINGTON -- Earlier in the season, David Krejci summarized linemate Milan Lucic’s work in the 2013-14 campaign rather succinctly. “He’s in the prime of his career,” Krejci said. “He’s an animal.”

Before Loui Eriksson got to Boston, he was considered one of the most underrated players in the league, but a stop-and-go start to his Bruins career prevented him from rocketing to local superstardom out of the gate.

Two seasons ago, Ryan McDonagh's first-period goal might have signaled the end of Friday’s game. Fortunately for the Bruins, times have changed.

11/28/2013 - 2:23am
When teams are playing well early on in the season, they want to sustain it. When they aren’t playing well, they want to be playing well by Thanksgiving, which, remember has served as something of a loose deadline for being in the playoff picture if you want to compete in the postseason.  After Wednesday night’s loss, the Bruins might be a little bit of both.
DJ Bean
11/26/2013 - 12:52am
The Bruins probably shouldn't go into games any more hoping for solid 60-minute efforts. That would assume these games are only going to be 60 minutes.  That has not been the case for six of their last 13 games, as the B's have gone into overtime regularly. Luckily for them, they're at least starting to avoid the shootout.
DJ Bean
11/23/2013 - 6:33pm
The second period of Saturday's game was positively a laugh riot. The Bruins were outshooting and out-everything-ing the Hurricanes. There was even a guy dressed as Jesus in the stands. Really crazy stuff over at TD Garden.
DJ Bean
11/22/2013 - 12:29am
In the world we live in, a game can go from having that “If you’re not watching this game, turn it on now” status to, “See? This is what's wrong with the NHL” pretty quickly.  Thursday night’s game between the Bruins and Blues was the poster child for why the shootout's days should be numbered.
DJ Bean
11/20/2013 - 6:39am
Here we thought Chad Johnson was going to start playing more.

It was a minor surprise to see that Jordan Caron was in the Bruins’ lineup Monday night in Carolina in place of Shawn Thornton, but seeing him on the second line by the end of the game was what really raised eyebrows.
DJ Bean
11/16/2013 - 12:52am
This isn’t an overreaction to seeing Matt Bartkowski have a productive first period Friday night, but an exploration of just how far the Bruins are willing to bend as they embrace a more offensive back end: Can Matt Bartkowski find a way to earn himself something at least loosely resembling a full-time job in the Bruins’ lineup as Adam McQuaid recovers from his lower-body injury?
DJ Bean
11/15/2013 - 12:32am
Chad Johnson needed that.
DJ Bean
11/13/2013 - 5:05pm
The Bruins paid Tuukka Rask $56 million to be the $3.5 million Tuukka Rask, as all they could have hoped for were eight repeat performances of his 2013 season. So far, they’re getting the same guy, and one who doesn’t seem changed by his newfound wealth.
DJ Bean
11/11/2013 - 6:39pm
From looking at the standings, you wouldn’t guess that the Bruins are just turning a corner as they try to hit their stride and get all of their new guys comfortable in their system.  That’s because as of Monday evening, after shutting out the Lightning in a 3-0 win, the B’s and their 23 points are just a point back of the Eastern Conference-leading Tampa squad.
