Here's a scary thought for the NHL: The Bruins don't need to be at their best to win.  They weren’t satisfied with their performance Thursday night against the Senators. Over the course of a season, whether 82 games or a lockout edition, that’s going to happen.

Patriots fans can only hope Bill Belichick and friends return from the scouting combine with a long list of defensive back options to sift through over the next couple months.

Manti Te'o was going to be the center of attention for one reason or another at the NFL scouting combine, but the attention he's getting seems to be a bit off. Te'o is being praised for how wonderfully he handled his media session and crushed for posting a 4.82 in the 40-yard dash, but his work with the media is being overhyped and his lack of speed is being overblown.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Working out can be a daunting thing for NFL prospects this time of year, but not for one Patriots target.

INDIANAPOLIS – For a lot of fans and a lot of media members, the NFL scouting combine is an introduction of sorts. Players’ names are learned, and first impressions are made through media interviews and workout numbers. It’s easy to make up your mind on a guy -- they’re either fast or slow, strong or weak, mature or Cam Newton.

The “2012”-13 campaign is young enough that some Bruins are still looking for their first goals, but the magic (or whatever you want to call it) of the lockout-shortened season is that the B’s are actually over a quarter of the way through their schedule.

Sometimes it takes an anomaly to put things in perspective. Such an anomaly came Friday night when the Bruins, who have been sensational in the third period this season, allowed three unanswered third-period goals to the Sabres, blowing a 2-1 lead and suffering their second regulation loss of the season in the process.

Contract years can be tricky for players. The pressure to perform and cash in with a big payday can be a distraction, and it can throw guys off their game.

Say this for the Bruins: They know the value of a point.
DJ Bean
02/11/2013 - 12:56am
The most alarming part of the Bruins’ 7-4 loss to the Sabres on Jan. 31 wasn’t the fact that nobody tried to slay the mighty John Scott, it was the fact that the defense was uncharacteristically treacherous in a game the B's let get away from them at the hands of Buffalo’s top line.

Tim Thomas is officially done as a Bruin, and he couldn’t leave a more complicated legacy behind in Boston.

WILMINGTON -- It's tough to tell whether Claude Julien will stick with the revamped lines that sparked enough offense to deliver the B's a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Canadiens Wednesday, as the team did not hold a full practice Thursday.

Let’s get the clichés out of the way early, because there’s a big one that come to mind after the Bruins’ 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Canadiens on Wednesday night at the Bell Centre.

The great Mitch Hedberg once said (and just skip down for the hockey part of this column) that being a comedian put him on the right side of what he found to be an amusing standard.  "I've got a great job,” he said. “I can talk for 45 minutes straight. If someone says one word, you're [expletive] out of here."

With all due respect to Bar Refaeli and that gentleman who is going to make a career out of being the ugliest person to kiss Bar Refaeli, the most shocking thing you could see these days is the NHL standings.

The Bruins have only played one more game through the first 15 days of the season than they did a season ago, but they -- as well as every other team in the NHL -- have been able to feel the difference between an 82-game leisurely paced season and a 48-game sprint.

If you can forgive Chris Bourque for not skipping Saturday’s game against the Maple Leafs to fly to Montreal and beat up John Scott during the Sabres-Canadiens matinee (sorry, been listening to a lot of talk radio callers this weekend), it should be easy to feel happy for him.

Tyler Seguin finally turned 21 this week, and though he can finally have a legal drink in the United States, at this point he’d probably prefer a goal to a Guinness.

Dougie Hamilton has heard the hip-hop anthem “Teach Me How To Dougie” a sickening amount of times. He’s heard it every way, from the original – released in 2010 by Cali Swag District – to the Johnny Boychuk locker room rendition.

WILMINGTON – Prior to this week, the last time Tuukka Rask played three full NHL games in a row was in the 2009-10 season. That will be a regular occurrence for the foreseeable future as he’s taken over the No. 1 goaltending job for the Bruins, and thus far Tuukka Time has been a good time for the B’s.
DJ Bean
01/24/2013 - 2:19am
As much as B’s fans had to have wanted that second point Wednesday night, the truth is that the first three games of the 48-game season have presented a big test, and thus far they’re passing with a 2-0-1 record. [Right: It took three games for the first “Yeah they lost, but…” column of the season. It’s been too long.]
DJ Bean

The Bruins have gotten off to the start they were hoping for through two games, as they enter a big matchup with the Rangers Wednesday with a 2-0-0 record.

It was easy to question Milan Lucic’s conditioning entering the season because he didn’t play in Europe or make a ton of appearances at practices organized by teammates during the lockout. Maybe those questions were warranted, and maybe they weren’t.
