If the Bruins have their druthers, Chad Johnson won't see any ice time during the postseason, but he might see quite a bit of it before then.

For the most part, players are chosen for the Olympics for a simple reason: They’re the best players in the world.  Yet, as is seen in sports time and time again, there’s a difference between being the best and being able to win. In the case of many of the Bruins in the 2014 Winter Olympics, they have both things going for them.
DJ Bean
02/08/2014 - 8:41pm
With 57 games in the books and the Olympic break upon them, the Bruins should feel pretty good with where they stand – in the Eastern Conference, at least.
DJ Bean

Encouraging losses are usually associated with bad teams. If a squad with no hopes of the postseason can hang around with an annual Cup contender, maybe it softens the blow and builds some confidence.

The Bruins have asked for a lot out of their system’s young defensemen and have gotten a lot this season. For the next two games, they’ll be asked to do something especially tough: look like the Bruins without Zdeno Chara.

WILMINGTON -- When Brad Marchand taunted a Canucks team that was routing the Bruins in December with Stanley Cup-themed gestures, one of the many issues that people took was the fact that Marchand hadn't moved on. The Bruins beat the Canucks three seasons ago and were still flaunting it.

Players leave teams all the time, and then they play those teams. In today's world of heavily turned-over rosters in professional sports, it's nothing new.
DJ Bean
01/31/2014 - 3:37am
The Bruins hadn't played from behind in a long time, so maybe that's why they were so bad at it Thursday.
DJ Bean
01/29/2014 - 1:59am
After Ryan Spooner’s three-point, six shot-on-goal performance Dec. 23 in Nashville, it appeared inevitable that Spooner would become the next young player with whom Bruins fans would become enamored.   It seemed that when the day came for Spooner to be moved either out of the lineup or back to Providence, it could be met by some uneasiness among the following Spooner had built.

With last offseason’s trade with the Stars, Patrice Bergeron’s line was supposed to be better this season than it was last season. It may have taken longer than expected and the personnel may be different than initially planned, but right now it is.
DJ Bean
01/25/2014 - 7:49pm
In two of the last three seasons -- the ones that saw the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup finals -- Peter Chiarelli pulled off at least one semi-significant trade for a forward. This season -- assuming the injury bug doesn't hit hard in the next month-plus -- he won’t need to work quite as hard.

Zdeno Chara’s father used to push him to the point of tears as he would train the growing teenager to become a professional hockey player.
DJ Bean
01/20/2014 - 10:29pm
Sunday and Monday could have been an ugly stretch for the Bruins, and considering that they lost Adam McQuaid in the second period in Chicago, the Bruins should feel pretty good about coming out of a back-to-back against the last two Stanley Cup champions with three points to show for it.
DJ Bean
01/19/2014 - 6:06pm
CHICAGO -- In the middle of December, Brad Marchand couldn't buy a goal as a slump dating back to last year's Cup finals continued. The only way he would get into the highlights was for acting like a punk against the Canucks and ticking off the Flames with a bad hit.
DJ Bean
01/18/2014 - 7:12pm
CHICAGO – The Bruins were hurt by their loss to the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals and still are. One can’t help but wonder what things would have been like if they weren’t so hurt at the time.
DJ Bean
01/17/2014 - 4:39pm
CHICAGO – Ryan Spooner is waiting, but then again he’s patient. That’s a useful asset as the skilled center looks for both his first goal and a future in the Bruins’ lineup.
DJ Bean

Eleventh and 12th.  That’s where the Bruins’ power play and penalty kill rank, respectively, but the major struggles of both of late have the Bruins both scratching their heads and losing games.
DJ Bean
01/13/2014 - 6:32pm
Matt Bartkowski began the season as a healthy scratch, and now he’s the Bruins’ best left-shot defense option not named Zdeno Chara.
DJ Bean
01/10/2014 - 4:54am
When it comes to replacing what Dennis Seidenberg has brought the Bruins the last three postseasons, there may be no better trade option than New York free agent-to-be Dan Girardi. He’s strong, blocks shots, kills penalties and plays a lot of minutes.
DJ Bean
01/08/2014 - 11:50am
Great goalies have dips in their production. Is this Tuukka Rask’s dip or have the last few games been an indication of what life without Dennis Seidenberg could be like for the Bruins?
DJ Bean
01/04/2014 - 6:34pm
Time off can do wonders for a player, even if it’s due to an injury. A good example of that right now would be Daniel Paille.   Paille is doing it all since returning from a mild concussion: He’s scoring goals, assisting goals and, for the first time all season, taking penalties.  At the time he was sent back from the team's Canadian road trip and forced to miss eight contests, he had two goals and two assists for four points through 30 games.
DJ Bean
01/03/2014 - 9:44am
Reilly Smith was not a throw-in in last summer’s trade between the Bruins and Stars.  "Oh, no. Absolutely not,” Peter Chiarelli says. “No, no, no." Here’s what Smith is, among other things: a player the Bruins had eyed for years, a skilled, slippery forward, a 22-year-old who is mature beyond his years -- and one more thing.
DJ Bean
01/01/2014 - 3:54am
Sometimes, starting goaltenders have to look over their shoulders at a promising backup. Right now Chad Johnson is a backup who might be looking over his shoulder at Niklas Svedberg.
DJ Bean
12/28/2013 - 9:12pm
Injuries have inconvenienced the Bruins all season, but things have gotten serious now that Dennis Seidenberg is done for the season with a torn ACL/MCL. It hurts them now, sure, but it won’t truly hurt them until the postseason rolls around.

Minor Details Ep. 94.2 with Jim Callis of MLB.com: Are Red Sox prospects overvalued?

Particularly in a year where the Red Sox have struggled while trying to integrate numerous young players into regular big league roles, accusations that Red Sox prospects are overrated -- whether by the team or writers -- have been widespread. Minor Details Ep. 94.1: Are prospects overvalued? Andrew Miller on being traded for Miguel Cabrera

With the trade deadline looming, the next few days will be defined by how teams value prospects -- and their potential long-term contributions -- against big leaguers with established track records who can address immediate needs. Are prospects being valued accurately? Red Sox left-hander Andrew Miller -- once one of the two key chips that sent Miguel Cabrera from the Marlins to the Tigers -- assesses the matter.

Ian Browne reflects on 10th anniversary of Red Sox-Yankees brawl

A compelling case can be made that July 24, 2004, represents as significant a landmark as any date in modern Red Sox history. On that day, a memorable brawl between the Red Sox and Yankees served as a catalyst for an epic 10-9 walkoff victory for the Red Sox over New York and indomitable closer Mariano Rivera, a game cited by many members of the 2004 team as pivotal in Boston's first championship run in 86 years. Ian Browne, who covers the Red Sox for MLB.com and authored Idiots Revisited, discusses the landmark game.
