This certainly wasn’t the start anyone had envisioned.

The season is young, but it’s safe to say the Bruins needed what they got Thursday night. What they got was a convincing win to follow a truly ugly loss Tuesday, and a win that saw their two underperforming power forwards get back on track.

Nathan Horton has been a hero in Boston since his first of three game-winning goals in the playoffs during the spring’s Stanley Cup run, but a new season has bought a new batch of frustrations for the B’s first-line right wing.

The Bruins were minutes away from their first 0-3-0 stretch since February on Saturday before they got renewed hope – both for the game in Chicago and the early part of their schedule – in one play.

Perhaps because of what they saw with their baseball team this year, Boston sports fans can tend to have a hard time dealing with one of their beloved teams getting off to a slow start. Through four games, a miniscule sample size, the Bruins are 1-3-0 -- their worst start since 1999 -- as they prepare to face the Blackhawks Saturday in a meeting of the last two Stanley Cup champions.

10/10/2011 - 4:56pm
The Bruins have said time and time again that their intention is to give Tuukka Rask more than the 27 starts he got last season, but how about giving him some offense?

Claude Julien had an interesting choice to make when it came to the second line this season.

The banner has been raised, the ceremonies have concluded, and the first game of the season is in the books. After dropping the season-opener to the new look Flyers, 2-1, on Thursday, the Stanley Cup champions can put all the hoopla behind them and focus on nothing but hockey. Finally.

The Bruins are in for an interesting year as they look to defend their Stanley Cup title. Thursday will feature one last celebration of the team's historic 2010-11 season, but the Bruins will have their hands full after that. Here are five questions facing the team as the season begins: Which team will be their biggest challenge?
DJ Bean
10/06/2011 - 1:39am
After a short summer and a training camp that has absolutely flown by, the roster is set and the Bruins are ready to defend their title. Hopefully, nobody who reads this space regularly has a good memory, as a first-round prediction of the Canadiens in six games last spring should be enough proof that you are not reading the work of Carnac the Magnificent. At any rate, I’ll use what we’ve seen from these players in the preseason and in practices to offer predictions for each Bruin’s player.

Tyler Seguin wasn’t happy about his un-Seguin-like numbers of a year ago, and as the young forward enters his second season, he feels he’s had enough experience, invested enough time in the weight room and spent enough observation hours in the press box last season to turn in a sophomore campaign that will remind people why he was the top-rated player in the 2010 draft.

Last fall, the Bruins went on the ultimate team-building trip, and by June, they'd had the ultimate season. This year featured no trip to Europe, but the B's hope that their team-building activities Sunday and Monday did the trick.

Bruins winger Jordan Caron got a taste of everything last season, but he's hungry to do something he couldn't do a year ago: keep a job in the NHL.
DJ Bean
09/29/2011 - 11:08pm
The Bruins looked good through two periods Thursday, as they outshot the Senators, 30-10, in the game’s first 40 minutes and were leading, 1-0, thanks to a power play goal. In a time of evaluation, B’s coach Claude Julien didn’t seem too concerned that the scoreboard read 2-1 in Ottawa’s favor by the end of the night.

When the defending Stanley Cup champions bring back nearly the exact same roster for the next season, training camp isn’t exactly full of position battles.
DJ Bean

As the Bruins played on the Garden ice for the first time since Game 6, the stakes may have been drastically different, but there was one similarity between the June 13 roster and that of Friday night: Nathan Horton was not on the ice.

For someone who has to know they have no chance of making the team this year, Alexander Khokhlachev sure is doing everything he can to make a good impression. His latest positive stride came in Tuesday’s annual black and white scrimmage, as the Russian 18-year-old had a pair of goals in the black team’s 4-1 victory.

It isn’t often that top-5 picks find themselves in their third organization at just 24 years of age, but Benoit Pouliot is making his latest leap to a new organization. Coming from the Canadiens, it’s a leap some (including Stanley Cup champion Michael Ryder) have taken before him, but an odd one at that.

Bruins forward and known motormouth Brad Marchand is probably used to giving players headaches on the ice with his yapping. On Wednesday, both he and the Bruins avoided a pretty sizable headache.

WILMINGTON -- The Bruins' prospects have already seen a good amount of the Ristuccia Arena ice as the team holds both July's development camp and September's rookie camp each year. The former is a minimal-pressure affair, as draft picks come to town to get familiar with the organization, with some power skating sprinkled in for good measure. For the latter, the stakes are a bit higher. As rookie camp opened on Friday, that much was clear.

09/08/2011 - 3:57pm
WILMINGTON -- As Brad Marchand and the Bruins took the ice for their first veterans practice of 2011, he seemed to be the same No. 63 who earned a cult following as a rookie in the team's Stanley Cup-winning 2010-11 campaign. He was the same size displayed the same temperment -- giving Chris Kelly, a puzzlingly common target for the happy-go-lucky Marchand's antics, a hard time.

Since winning the Stanley Cup, Bruins forward Nathan Horton has had the shortest offseason of his career by a large margin.

MIDDLETON – Last year, Bruins forward Shawn Thornton was joined by teammates Tuukka Rask and Milan Lucic at the Ferncroft country club in Middleton as he held the first annual “Putts and Punches for Parkinson’s” golf tournament.
