Though the end got a bit scary for the Bruins in their 3-2 victory over the Capitals on Saturday (recap), the win accomplished two things. It snapped their three-game losing streak and it put one of the tougher teams in the division (usually, anyway) out of their heads for the rest of the regular season.

Thursday night's game, a 4-3 Bruins' loss (recap) to Montreal, featured just about everything it could have, including more goals than one would have expected in a contest started by Tim Thomas and Carey Price.  Thomas allowed four goals for just the second time this season and took his first road loss in regulation, while Price allowed three in picking up his league-leading 18th win of the season.

Penalties and a Drew Stafford hat trick did the Bruins in as they fell to the Sabres, 3-2, on Wednesday (recap), but the more significant big-picture story was that the game marked the first time Tyler Seguin was a healthy scratch.

The Bruins and Flyers came within three seconds of a shootout on Saturday night, but Mike Richards ended it with a 2-1 Philadelphia win before it could come to that.  The Flyers got the overtime victory off a Marc Savard pass to nobody at the point, and Richards gained possession, kept it the whole way, and beat Thomas.

Milan Lucic added two more goals to his team-leading total in the Bruins' 5-2 victory over the Islanders on Thursday night. He now has 15 on the season, and continues to make his preseason hope for 20 goals look like the underestimation of the century.

Tim Thomas called it a "weird game," as the Bruins defeated the Sabres, 3-2, in overtime on Tuesday.   The Bruins struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities at times in regulation, but they scored when it mattered most, as Mark Recchi tipped a Dennis Seidenberg shot past Ryan Miller with the Bruins on the power play in overtime. Yet the puck bounced in and out quickly, perhaps as a result of hitting the crossbar, and play continued with no goal being called.

The Bruins rocked the Lightning to the tune of an 8-1 victory at TD Garden on Tuesday night. Twelve Bruins ended up on the score sheet, and Tim Thomas made 37 saves on 38 shots to improve to 13-2-1 on the season.

The Bruins didn't have the fondest memories of Philadelphia as they entered Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night. Thought they couldn't erase what happened last May, a shutout victory over one of the Eastern Conference's top teams had to have been the best salve they could have hoped for.

The Bruins have it bad enough right now without being reminded of how bad it was last May.  Yet on Wednesday, the B's, currently in the midst of a 5-6-2 slump, will have the chance to turn last season's devastation -- a blown three-games-to-none series lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals against Flyers -- into a motivating factor when they head to Philadelphia for the first time since Game 6.

On Monday, the Bruins traded defenseman Matt Hunwick to the Avalanche in exchange for former Boston University defenseman Colby Cohen. Hunwick, 25, was in his fourth season with the B's. He had three points and a plus-4 rating through 22 games. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said the deal had been in the works for some time, and the trigger was pulled on Monday.

Every offseason is full uncertainty. Of course, the summer is also the time that everyone, from the fans to the media and everyone in between, looks at what the coming season may hold. It's no surprise that once the games are played, just about everybody gets proven wrong in some, way shape or form. Injuries, sleepers and letdowns happen, and it's impossible to always see each one coming.

The Bruins were missing a couple of key guys from Saturday's practice in Jordan Caron and David Krejci. Both players, as well as Marco Sturm, were battling the flu, but the absences weren't the story for B's. Instead of worrying about who wasn't on the ice, it seemed the focus was on the guy who was there -- the guy who was doing everything without any problems.

It was an ugly special teams showing for the Bruins, but to put it in plainer terms, Friday's 3-0 loss against the Hurricanes in their black Friday matinee was just an ugly showing all around.

After Wednesday's 3-1 Bruins' win over the Panthers (recap), a couple of things seem to be happening more than one would expect this season: the B's are falling behind and overcoming it, and Brad Marchand is scoring shorthanded goals.
DJ Bean
11/23/2010 - 1:27am
Given the Bruins' 7-1-0 road record entering Monday, one would think it would take a lot for a team to defeat them away from TD Garden. Luckily for the Lightning, the B's didn't give a lot in a 3-1 loss Monday night. Not 60 minutes' worth, at least.
DJ Bean
11/21/2010 - 2:28am
The Bruins came back from a 3-0 deficit for the second time this season, but unlike the first time in Washington, they grabbed a point in a 4-3 shootout loss. David Krejci made his return to the Bruins' lineup after it was unknown whether he would play.

In sports, there are perfect matches, and there are just bad fits. Call them what they are.  Nathan Horton and the Florida Panthers were just a bad fit.  "Nothing [changed] when I was there," Horton told WEEI.com recently. "It was tough. Some days were tough to go to the rink. Losing all the time is not fun."

NEW YORK -- The Bruins grinded out a tough win over the Rangers on Wednesday, edging them in yet another one-goal game, 3-2. Tim Thomas made 34 saves on the night, really turning it on late as the Bruins were forced to kill off a 5-on-3 in a one-goal game late in the third period.  "He was the difference," Rangers coach John Tortorella said of Thomas following the game. "We had a chance at the end on the 5-on-3 three and we don't get it done, but he certainly was the difference."

The Bruins ended their losing streak at home (0-2-1 over their last three at the Garden) on Monday night, defeating the Devils, 3-0, thanks to a 28-save shutout by Tim Thomas.

The Bruins' goaltenders have been saying "that's hockey" an awful lot lately, and it hasn't been following poor individual performances.

11/12/2010 - 2:59am
The Bruins followed up an impressive come-from-behind victory in Pittsburgh by returning to the Garden in style, but unfortunately it was the same style fans have grown accustomed to in Boston over the last year. The B's struggled to get going throughout the night and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Canadiens.
DJ Bean
11/11/2010 - 12:24am
The Bruins finally made their statement in Pittsburgh, and it didn't involve anybody touching Matt Cooke.
DJ Bean
11/09/2010 - 2:16am
As Peter Chiarelli addressed the media on Monday regarding the status of David Krejci, who is out for at least a week with a concussion, it was clear as day that for a team that's off to such a hot start (7-3-1), the Bruins sure do have to give a lot of injury updates. Their top goal-scorer of a year ago, Marco Sturm, is still recovering from knee surgery.

11/07/2010 - 3:06am
There was one word on the minds of observers throughout Saturday night thanks to four pucks clanking off posts in the B's shootout loss to the Blues. Turns out it was on the Bruins' minds too.
