About Dj Bean

DJ Bean grew up in Section 127 of Fenway Park thanks to his grandfather's season ticket package and has immersed himself in the Boston sports scene ever since. In addition to co-founding multi-sport draft site DraftEmpire.com, DJ has written for the Boston Metro and 890 ESPN, among other outlets. He has been writing for WEEI.com since the summer of 2009 and continues to spread the Byron Leftwich gospel on Guest Street.

Five things we learned from Bruins' development camp
WILMINGTON  -- The Bruins 2011 development camp is in the books, and though the end result was a room full of sore skaters, the Bruins are happy with what they’ve been able to get out the five-day camp. They get a look at which players are in tip-top shape (quite a few) and which ones need work (Alexander Khokhlachev), while the players get to know one another.

Alexander Khokhlachev still learning in more ways than one
WILMINGTON – Every player entering his first development camp goes through the same thing. Much like the first day of kindergarten or college, there’s far less familiarity and far more new faces. For Bruins’ second-round pick Alexander Khokhlachev, he’s used to experiencing new things, as he, much like David Krejci years before him, left Europe to play junior hockey in Canada before eventually being drafted by the B’s.

While spenders make flashy moves, Bruins continue to play it safe
When Tomas Kaberle remained unsigned as the fifth day of free agency began, it seemed the Bruins might be in store for some type of a bargain. They certainly ended up getting their bargain, but it wasn’t with Kaberle.

Bruins might be able to go discount shopping for Tomas Kaberle
What if Ari Gold represented Tomas Kaberle? If it were the fictional agent on Entourage, and not Rick Curran, who advised the free agent defenseman, he could simply recycle one of his lines on his client, and it would be pretty close to dead-on in accuracy: “It ain't eight months ago, man. Listen, you cooled off. The $5 million offers do not exist.”

Free agency should hardly be a frenzy for Bruins
July 1 is a significant day for any team in the NHL. It can be the day that they change their franchise with a big signing, or the day they see a player walk out the door and find a new home on the market. For the Stanley Cup champs, it might not mean anything.

In defense of Max Pacioretty
Many thought that the Max Pacioretty/Zdeno Chara/Sgt. Ian Lafreniere circus was a thing of the past, but it once again reared its ridiculous head this week when the Montreal Police Department revealed that it still intended to speak to the Bruins' captain about the whatever-you-want-to-call-it that happened back on March 8.

Title defense: How will Bruins approach blueline this offseason?
When Kevin Bieksa took himself off the market Monday by re-upping with the Canucks for five years and $23 million, two things happened: First, anyone who had expected him to take some big hometown discount was surprisingly proven wrong. Second, any team with a big-name defenseman set to become unrestricted on Friday felt a little more pressure.

For Bruins, a different offseason indeed
The Bruins had only stopped reeking of cigar smoke and spirits for a few days when the time came for their brass to begin an offseason that at face value seemed straightforward enough. With two key players set to become unrestricted free agents and one restricted, a lot would have to happen for the Stanley Cup victors’ NHL roster to be glaringly different when the championship banner is raised on Oct. 6 at TD Garden.

Thomas' historic season bigger than the Vezina
There were plenty of things one could question during Wednesday night’s NHL Awards in Las Vegas, though nothing hockey-related could touch the bewilderment brought on by Criss Angel’s presence, any of Jay Mohr’s accents or Donny Osmond’s insistence that everyone know his life story.

What's next for the Bruins? A player-by-player look
Last offseason, many were wondering what the future held for Bruins netminder Tim Thomas. He was set to turn 37 during the season, and he had three years left on his deal with an annual cap hit of $5 million. Factoring in that he was coming off hip surgery after losing the starting job to Tuukka Rask months before, it was a very uncertain future for the one-time Vezina winner.

Five things we learned: Bruins have to forget Vancouver woes, give Thomas Conn Smythe, fans stoop to new low
The Bruins got their wish. There will be a Game 7, and unfortunately or otherwise, it will be in Vancouver.  After Monday’s 5-2 win in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals, the Bruins can forget about TD Garden. The next time they play there competitively, it will be in a black-and-white scrimmage in September. They’ve done all they can there this season, including dominate Roberto Luongo three times in as many chances.

Decisions, decisions: Claude Julien has made the right ones
The Bruins’ season will end in either a matter of hours or a matter of days, and no matter what, Claude Julien will be a popular man. He’ll either be the guy who brought the Stanley Cup back to Boston, the one whose team fell just short, or, as could be expected given the lunacy in this town, the man whose team won in spite of him.

With Cup winnable, B's can't let this be one that got away
Three nights from now, the Bruins will either be hoisting the Stanley Cup in Vancouver, or they’ll be somewhere between a few minutes and a couple days into a gloomy offseason.  The Bruins have either one or two games left in their season, and given that they are one loss away from falling just short of reaching their ultimate goal, it’s easy too look at where things have gone wrong and why they might not fire off two straight wins.

VANCOUVER – Rogers Arena has been a British Columbian version of hell for the Bruins. It’s where their scoring goes to die, and where they’ve suffered their last three losses. Now, all they can hope is that they get to play there again.

Closing the book on Nathan Horton's year, and looking ahead
It's been quite a season for Nathan Horton who went from being the big offseason acquisition to the answer to the Bruins’ scoring woes to incapable of scoring and ultimately to becoming one of the great clutch athletes in Boston history. Unfortunately for Bruins fans, the year is over for No. 18, and too soon.

Chris Kelly joked earlier in the week that he didn’t think Jarkko Ruutu bit Andrew Peters back in 2009. It was a joke because no matter how obvious it is, teammates are going to stick up for teammates.

Five things we learned from Game 2: Burrows strikes again
VANCOUVER – Hope you’re ready to hear about resiliency for two days. When Alexandre Burrows [insert dental-themed verb]-ed the Bruins with a three-point performance that included the game winner 11 seconds into overtime Saturday, he gave Vancouver a commanding 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup finals. Optimism, not results, still the theme for power play
VANCOUVER -- It's the last thing the Bruins want to talk about, and the last thing anyone in the media wants to ask about. The devastation of the power play has gotten old, and the Bruins have gone from hoping, to being out of answers, and now to being very optimistic.

Mark Recchi may be nearing end, but minutes are least of his concerns
VANCOUVER – Mark Recchi is ready to walk away from a Hall of Fame playing career if the Bruins defeat the Canucks and win the Stanley Cup. This means there’s a pretty good chance that the 43-year-old could have between four and seven games left before he retires from the game.

Bruins-Canucks matchups: Closer than you'd think
VANCOUVER — Rumor has it that were it not for some confusion over how to spell “Oreskovich,” the Stanley Cup already would be engraved with the names of the 2010-11 Canucks.  Yet the Bruins have to be feeling A-OK after advancing to the finals for the first time since 1990. As a result, it should be interesting to watch the “underdog” Bruins, who beat the Canucks 3-1 in the regular season, try to prove a lot of people wrong.
