Special teams have played a big role in the second-round series between the Bruins and Canadiens.

You can't call what the Bruins did in Game 2 Saturday against the Canadiens a comeback for the ages, as the Bruins come back too often for anything short of Game 7 against the Maple Leafs to stand the test of time.
DJ Bean

There are no good losses in the postseason. There are only wins and steps toward elimination.  The Bruins' 4-3 double-overtime loss in Game 1 of the second round was a step toward elimination, but let's be real: If they play like that every game this series, they won't need to worry about getting bounced.

Patrice Bergeron has earned a reputation for winning, but before it all, he was an 18-year-old rookie playing against the Montreal Canadiens in his first postseason experience.

Zdeno Chara has been the most difficult defenseman in the NHL to play against for a long, long time. Yet when all is said and done, he might finish with just one Norris Trophy.

Whistles and more whistles made up the final two periods of Game 5 between the Bruins and Red Wings. Can you think of a better way to prepare for the Canadiens?

DETROIT -- The Red Wings faithful stood and chanted proudly at Joe Louis Arena Thursday night. Their words: “Lucic sucks!” For the better part of two periods, they were the smartest fans in hockey.

DETROIT -- Jarome Iginla has now seen both sides of it. The Bruins are in lockdown mode and it's working.

DETROIT -- The Red Wings learned the hard way Tuesday night that you can't give teams even one period in the playoffs. In particular, you shouldn't give a team that doesn't let you score a period.  Game 3 saw the Bruins blank the Red Wings, 3-0, at Joe Louis Arena and take a 2-1 series lead. Detroit was better in the second and third periods, but a wretched first period meant a wretched result.
DJ Bean
04/21/2014 - 1:52pm
It’s been something of an inconsistent start to the postseason for the Bruins offensively, as they struggled to get set up in the Detroit zone in Game 1 and were shut out, then bounced back with four goals in Game 2.
DJ Bean
04/20/2014 - 11:54pm
Even if it was only parts of five periods -- 98 minutes and 15 seconds, to be exact -- David Krejci's line did not get the start it wanted. Not at all.
DJ Bean
04/19/2014 - 1:37am
A matchup that looked favorable for the Bruins looked less favorable when Chris Kelly, Daniel Paille, Matt Bartkowski and Kevan Miller were absent as the B’s and Red Wings took the ice for warmups Friday night at TD Garden.
DJ Bean
04/17/2014 - 11:50pm
In the 2011 postseason, the Bruins had a great third line. Not only did it help get them out of the first round, but it helped them win the Stanley Cup. Last postseason, put plainly, they did not have a good third line.
DJ Bean
04/17/2014 - 2:48pm
The season was about halfway over when Reilly Smith began to put two and two together: His team was really good, and his brother was playing for a good team that had injuries. Months later, the pieces fell into place to set up a Bruins-Red Wings meeting in the first round and the brothers Smith will square off in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Torey Krug was a veteran of three NHL games and was headed to Wilkes-Barre with his Providence teammates for Game 3 of the second round last season.

Last year, Dougie Hamilton could only watch from the press box as the Bruins came so close to their goal of winning the Stanley Cup. He was a rookie then, and the Bruins didn’t need him on the blue line.  Now they do, and in a big way.
DJ Bean
04/15/2014 - 8:13am
The Red Wings will be a pretty tough matchup for the Bruins, but the Bruins are a nightmare matchup for anyone.  The first round of the playoffs matches the Bruins against a Detroit team that handled them in the regular season (the Red Wings won three of the four games, including a 6-1 drubbing at Joe Louis Arena on Nov. 27), and is getting healthier than it was for much of the season.
DJ Bean
04/14/2014 - 10:22am
In perhaps the strangest way, the Bruins were better than anyone expected them to be this season.
DJ Bean
04/12/2014 - 6:00pm
You don’t see many 30-goal seasons around these parts. It might be a long time before anyone sees another like Patrice Bergeron’s.
DJ Bean
04/11/2014 - 2:32am
The Bruins said they were going to rest their best players. Nobody said it was going to be enjoyable, but it will all be over soon.  It seems the B’s haven’t enjoyed the not-quite-post-regular-season, pre-postseason part of their schedule and it’s hard to blame them; it’s boring.
DJ Bean
04/09/2014 - 8:39am
The Bruins aren’t going for the Presidents' Trophy -- they haven’t all season -- and they’re probably going to get it.
DJ Bean
04/07/2014 - 5:25pm
Andrej Meszaros is good enough to play for a lot of teams, but he understands the chances of him being a seventh defenseman on a Stanley Cup favorite.
DJ Bean
04/06/2014 - 1:19am
The Bruins have the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, so who’s No. 8? Though the potential opponents vary in degrees of difficulty, there really isn’t a first-round scenario that should scare them as long as they don’t suffer any injuries in the next four games. In other words, the Bruins can beat any of these teams.
