INDIANAPOLIS — The Patriots have never been about making a big splash at the annual NFL Scouting Combine.

At the annual NFL Scouting Combine this week at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the measurables like the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical leap will make for good television on the NFL Network. But often, the big decisions teams make on a player won’t come as a result of his on-camera audition, but behind closed doors.

The Patriots' decision to assign the franchise tag to nose tackle Vince Wilfork on Monday opens up several options for both sides.

If the Patriots are looking for pass-rushing help, many draft experts believe that this is a good year for the outside linebacker/defensive ends who are traditionally coveted by Bill Belichick.

Beating Peyton Manning is something that used to routinely happen around these parts. Each time they were able to do it, the Patriots were able to execute a fairly consistent game plan to get the job done. To that end, here are five things that to watch for in Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIV between the Colts and the Saints, many of which will look awful similar to New England football fans who paid attention to the epic New England-Indianapolis struggles from earlier this decade. When it comes to the Patriots’ Super Bowl history, everyone knows about the big moments: Tom Brady’s clutch drives. Adam Vinatieri’s game-winners. Ty Law, Deion Branch and Troy Brown coming through with the season on the line time and again.

Maybe Sean Payton and Jim Caldwell knew what they were doing.   The decisions made by the head coaches of the Saints and Colts to rest their starters over the final couple of weeks of the regular-season drew plenty of criticism, who charged that the two top seeds were running the risk of destroying any momentum their teams had heading into the postseason.   Those critics grew louder, especially when Indianapolis forfeited its shot at a perfect season when they yanked their starters midway through a Dec. 27 loss to the Jets.

FOXBORO — For the Patriots, it was a sobering Monday morning. Less than 24 hours after their playoff defeat to Baltimore, a relatively muted locker room was crowded with garbage bags and moving boxes as the franchise started its offseason with talk of missed opportunities and open speculation about what comes next.

FOXBORO — Size matters. That’s why the sight of big defensive linemen Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren both participating fully in practice for the third consecutive day on Friday is good news for the Patriots — the two anchors of the defensive line have missed the better part of the last month. Wilfork, named to his second Pro Bowl late last month, has been sidelined the last three games because of a foot injury, while Warren has struggled with an ankle injury that’s forced him to miss two of the last three contests.

Through the years in Boston sports, there have been a few select relationships that could be classified as special, in which one brings out the best in the other(s), lifting all parties to the next level: Larry Bird and Dennis Johnson.

FOXBORO — On Tuesday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, in his final press conference of the decade, Tom Brady left no doubt as to where he’ll be on Sunday.
