Maybe Sean Payton and Jim Caldwell knew what they were doing.   The decisions made by the head coaches of the Saints and Colts to rest their starters over the final couple of weeks of the regular-season drew plenty of criticism, who charged that the two top seeds were running the risk of destroying any momentum their teams had heading into the postseason.   Those critics grew louder, especially when Indianapolis forfeited its shot at a perfect season when they yanked their starters midway through a Dec. 27 loss to the Jets.

Pro football in New England this season came to an ugly and unceremonious end on Jan. 10 at Gillette Stadium, leaving local football fans without a team to follow throughout the playoffs.

With Dean Pees gone, the focus now shifts to the two likeliest candidates to replace him as Patriots defensive coordinator: Matt Patricia and Pepper Johnson.

FOXBORO — For the Patriots, it was a sobering Monday morning. Less than 24 hours after their playoff defeat to Baltimore, a relatively muted locker room was crowded with garbage bags and moving boxes as the franchise started its offseason with talk of missed opportunities and open speculation about what comes next.

FOXBORO — When it came to the postseason, it was a walk that had seen a lot of misery.

FOXBORO — Size matters. That’s why the sight of big defensive linemen Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren both participating fully in practice for the third consecutive day on Friday is good news for the Patriots — the two anchors of the defensive line have missed the better part of the last month. Wilfork, named to his second Pro Bowl late last month, has been sidelined the last three games because of a foot injury, while Warren has struggled with an ankle injury that’s forced him to miss two of the last three contests.

Through the years in Boston sports, there have been a few select relationships that could be classified as special, in which one brings out the best in the other(s), lifting all parties to the next level: Larry Bird and Dennis Johnson.

FOXBORO — On Tuesday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, in his final press conference of the decade, Tom Brady left no doubt as to where he’ll be on Sunday.
Christopher Price
12/31/2009 - 1:50am
While so many other Patriots teams of the decade have been easily labeled by the time the playoffs roll around — offensive juggernaut, defensive powerhouse, indefatigable underdog, etc. — the 2009 team has resisted characterizations. And as a result, the ultimate legacy of this year’s team is still yet to be written.

Quarterback Tom Brady led a quartet of Patriots who were named to the AFC Pro Bowl team on Tuesday evening. Brady, left guard Logan Mankins, nose tackle Vince Wilfork and wide receiver Wes Welker will be joining Brady at the Pro Bowl. It is the fifth Pro Bowl selection for Brady, while the other three will all be headed there for the second time. Mankins and Wilfork were named starters, while Brady and Welker were named reserves. Overall, the Patriots are tied for the fourth-most players on the AFC team, behind the Colts (six), Ravens (five) and Chargers (five).

When it comes to deciding who is going to play and who will sit in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Texans in Houston, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is well aware of the reality of the situation. “Down in Foxboro, it’s not like it’s a democracy down there anyway. We don’t sit around and take votes to see what we’re going to do. It’s a one-man show,” Brady said of coach Bill Belichick. “He makes the decisions.”

FOXBORO — The mask first appeared in the second half, and it was an indication of just what kind of day it would be at Gillette Stadium.
Christopher Price
12/24/2009 - 12:36am
With two games left in the regular season and the playoffs looming just over the horizon, quarterback Tom Brady confessed Wednesday that the Patriots still are searching for an offensive identity. “We’re still trying to find the combinations of things,” Brady said when asked about this year’s offensive identity. “We’re a pretty balanced team, I think. We try to run it; we try to throw it. Last week we ran it more than we threw it. Other weeks we’ve thrown it.”

Randy Moss didn’t want to leave any doubt. The wide receiver didn’t take any questions in the wake of Sunday’s 17-10 win over the Bills in Buffalo. (Click here for the complete game recap.) Instead, he simply made a statement and left.
Christopher Price
12/18/2009 - 2:20am
FOXBORO — How will Randy respond? In the wake of Moss' worst statistical game in his two-plus years as a Patriot, it’s a question that was asked a half-million times this past week. The wide receiver left the world wondering where his head was at after not talking Wednesday or Thursday, leaving everyone to ponder what was going on with him.
Christopher Price
12/17/2009 - 9:44pm
FOXBORO — It’s a rare gift the Patriots don’t expect to get again. In the season opener in September, Buffalo’s special teams unit committed a rare mistake that gave the Patriots an opportunity to sneak away with a come-from-behind win. Kick returner Leodis McKelvin fumbled away a late return, opening the door for a late New England touchdown and paving the way for a 25-24 Patriots win.

12/17/2009 - 12:03am
FOXBORO — Author Henry David Thoreau once implored his readers to, “Simplify, simplify.” Thoreau wasn’t much for football, but the New England native surely would have appreciated what the Patriots’ defense did against Carolina on Sunday. According to many New England defenders, there were fewer intricacies in the defensive game plan for the Panthers. Instead, things were simplified. The move allowed the Patriots to cut down on the communication issues that had dogged them in the losses to Miami and New Orleans over the previous two games.

Welcome back to the bag, and I hope everyone is having a happy and safe holiday season. This week, we’ve got lots of talk about a certain No. 81 and what happened to him on Sunday against the Panthers.
Christopher Price
12/14/2009 - 4:54pm
FOXBORO — A day after Carolina defensive back Chris Gamble accused Randy Moss of checking out during Sunday’s Patriots-Panthers game, Moss’ coach and teammates came to the defense of the wide receiver on Monday, with New England coach Bill Belichick accusing Carolina of sour grapes. “My response would be that’s a lot of conversation coming from a team that just lost another game,” Belichick said of the Panthers, who suffered a 20-10 defeat to the Patriots.
Christopher Price
12/14/2009 - 2:40am
FOXBORO — It was not a masterpiece. One of the quarterbacks had 59 passing yards and an interception at halftime … and his team ended up winning the game. There was a missed field goal, there were more than 100 yards of penalties and the winning team turned the ball over three times.
