With NFL players and owners looking at a deadline of midnight Friday before a potential lockout — and league’s first work stoppage since 1987 — the two sides have dissolved into name-calling, going back and forth Thursday afternoon and evening in the media as time ticked down toward the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

They’re still talking. Above all else, that’s the most important thing to remember.

There were no public statements from Patriots officials, and Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio were mostly out of sight, out of mind. But the annual NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis still had enough local elements to keep Patriots’ fans interested about what happened over the course of the week.

For the Patriots, the annual NFL Combine — set to open this week in Indianapolis — is an important part of their overall assessment of college prospects.

Here are 10 things worth keeping an eye on in Sunday’s Super Bowl XLV between the Steelers and Packers:

After Green Bay’s B.J. Raji picked off Chicago quarterback Caleb Hanie in the NFC Championship and cruised into the end zone from 18 yards out, he performed ... well, it wasn’t quite something out of Chad Ochocinco’s book, but it was pretty close. Let’s just say his touchdown dance was more Michael Strahan than Michael Flatley.
Christopher Price
01/31/2011 - 1:27am
There will be plenty of people in Massachusetts rooting for the Packers in Super Bowl XLV Sunday, and not just because they want Green Bay to deny Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers another Super Bowl ring.
Christopher Price

No one knows what Tom Brady and Bill Belichick want in a wide receiver more than Troy Brown.

Learning from losses. It’s something the Patriots have done each season since Bill Belichick has been in charge down in Foxboro. For a championship-driven franchise, falling short of a Super Bowl title is a bitter pill. But over the last few offseasons, the Patriots have used the losses as a teaching tool.

It was somewhere between the third or fourth missed tackle from Bart Scott and the crushing hit that Mark Sanchez took just before the end of the first half before the realization started to set in: After an emotionally draining win over the Patriots the previous Sunday in Foxboro, the Jets had nothing left in the tank.

Tom Brady underwent successful surgery on his right foot Thursday at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday, and according to several reports, is doing well.

01/19/2011 - 1:27am
Trying to determine the legacy of the 2010 Patriots is a complicated process. Did they fall short of their ultimate goal, victims of the lofty standards set by their predecessors? Or were they dynamic overachievers, surpassing the expectations that pundits put on them at the start of the season?

FOXBORO — The whole thing felt more than a little like the final day of school: Lockers were being cleaned out, guys were saying goodbye and making plans to meet up soon. All that was missing was someone passing around a yearbook to sign.
Christopher Price
01/17/2011 - 3:59am
FOXBORO — Down the tunnel they came, one after the other, happy Jets’ players making airplane noises. With their arms outstretched, they pretended to fly from the field to the tunnel to the locker room, singing and laughing. Antonio Cromartie led the way, followed closely by teammates like Trevor Pryce and Bart Scott, joyfully gliding down the tunnel toward the visitors’ locker room at Gillette Stadium.

Here are 10 things worth keeping an eye on in Sunday’s Patriots-Jets game: WHEN THE PATRIOTS HAVE THE BALL
Christopher Price
01/14/2011 - 1:03am
FOXBORO — The memory is tough to shake. The first play from scrimmage in last year’s wild card game between the Patriots and Ravens, New England defensive lineman Vince Wilfork was knocked sideways as Baltimore's bowling ball of a running back Ray Rice shot up the middle for 83 yards.
Christopher Price
01/12/2011 - 11:51pm
The Jets’ defense is known as a fast, aggressive, blitzing group. But in truth, the perception is different than reality, especially when it comes to facing the Patriots as of late.

In the December matchup between the Patriots and Jets, Revis Island was a lonely place.

The Patriots live by a series of core beliefs: Don’t believe the hype. Stay hungry and stay humble. Do your job. Well done is better than well said.
Christopher Price
01/09/2011 - 10:27pm
Don’t suggest to Patriots coach Bill Belichick that the first two games New England and New York played earlier this season will have much of an effect on the third game, set for Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Instead, like all great trilogies, the third chapter might surprise some people.
Christopher Price
01/07/2011 - 1:06am
FOXBORO — Adam Vinatieri and Lonie Paxton were playoff heroes for the Patriots, posting clutch performances in the postseason on several occasions to lift New England to greatness. Along the way, Shayne Graham and Matt Katula couldn’t help but notice the heroics.

01/06/2011 - 12:54am
FOXBORO — The first real indication that 14-2 might be truly in the rearview came Wednesday morning with a film session that was more critical than anything Roger Ebert could have dreamed up. “There was a lot of stuff that was pointed out,” said wide receiver Deion Branch shortly after the session wrapped up.
Christopher Price
01/05/2011 - 12:41am
So much of the success of this year’s Patriots team has been a multigenerational effort, with rookies and second-year players meshing well with established veterans. It’s produced a 14-2 regular-season record and the top seed in the AFC playoff race.
