It's hard to imagine a team that keeps the same coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback in place could change its offense so dramatically from one season to the next, but the 2013 Patriots are about as far removed as they could be offensively from what they did last year.

If the 2013 Patriots do turn out to be a championship team, we can look back on the Sept. 29 game against the Falcons in the Georgia Dome as the night where they took a sizable step forward.

Bell cow. Feature back. Lead dog. No matter what you call them, at one time or another over the last 13 years, Antowain Smith, Corey Dillon, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Stevan Ridley all established themselves as the No. 1 running back with the Patriots.

The Patriots travel to Atlanta Sunday night to face the Falcons, one of the better offenses in the league. Despite their 1-2 mark, Matt Ryan and Atlanta enter the contest ninth in the league in total offense (379 yards per game) and 12th in the league in points per game (23.7 points per game).

FOXBORO -- Dismissed for the better part of the last five-plus seasons as a mere sideshow when compared to the Patriots’ high-powered offensive extravaganza, the defense has turned the tables through the early stages of the 2013 regular season and has outplayed an inconsistent offense for most of the first two games.

FOXBORO -- The return of Rob Gronkowski will mean several things for not just the Patriots passing game, but the offense in general.

It’s the start of a new season, and the new year brings fresh challenges for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. In Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Bills in Buffalo, Belichick will be facing someone in Doug Marrone who has zero experience as a head coach in the NFL.

So, are you a glass-is-half-full individual? If so, you’re encouraged by the sight of rookie receiver Kenbrell Thompkins coming away with eight catches for 116 yards, as well as the sight of the Patriots No. 1 defense -- without Vince Wilfork -- playing very well when it counted.

FOXBORO -- The defining characteristic of the Patriots offense the last two seasons has been its uptempo, no-huddle approach. In 2011 and 2012, the Patriots went no-huddle on 25 percent of their snaps, an astounding total that allowed them to push the pace and keep opposing defenses off guard.
