FOXBORO -- The defining characteristic of the Patriots offense the last two seasons has been its uptempo, no-huddle approach. In 2011 and 2012, the Patriots went no-huddle on 25 percent of their snaps, an astounding total that allowed them to push the pace and keep opposing defenses off guard.

In hindsight, Bill Belichick deciding to cultivate a relationship with Urban Meyer might not have been such a hot idea for the Patriots.

In the end, there wasn’t a question as to whether or not it was going to be a happy ending for Aaron Hernandez. Instead, it was all just varying degrees of bad and sad for everyone involved.

In the wake of the most eventful offseason in recent franchise history, there are two distinct ways to look at the state of the Patriots.

1. In the wake of Hernandez’s connection to the recent murder of Odin Lloyd, it’s important to remember that even if the Patriots tight end is completely exonerated, he will almost certainly face discipline from the NFL.

With the spring practices -- OTAs and minicamps -- now completed, the 2013 Patriots are starting to come into sharper focus. And inevitably, while there are guys who appear to be roster locks, there are also players who -- at least as of right now -- appear to be on the bubble when it comes to making decisions on the 53-man roster.

The Patriots made several moves this offseason, but they didn’t acquire any one of the high-end pass-rushers who were available in free agency. In addition, they didn’t push all their chips to the middle of the table on one of the elite pass-rushers who were available in this year’s draft.
