FOXBORO -- Shaun Ellis knows Albert Haynesworth better than most. And when Ellis spoke to his former college teammates the last two years, Ellis could tell that something was wrong with his friend.

FOXBORO — When the Dolphins roll out for their first offensive series against the Patriots Monday night in Miami, some of the schemes could look a little familiar to the folks in New England.

FOXBORO -- The new guys weren’t talking on Wednesday, but there were plenty of other folks who were willing to discuss the impact that tight end Dan Gronkowski and linebacker A.J. Edds could have on the Patriots.

No position was a hotter topic for the Patriots throughout the preseason than safety.

FOXBORO — Tom Brady once described left guard Logan Mankins as the sort of player “who plays until the echo of the whistle,” meaning there’s a bit of an edge to what he does.

The Patriots made it official on Sunday, announcing the acquisition of veteran offensive lineman Brian Waters. The 34-year-old guard, a five-time Pro Bowler, is a 6-foot-3, 320-pounder who was cut loose late last month by the Chiefs after 11 seasons in Kansas City. According to ESPN, Waters inked a two-year deal with the Patriots that could be worth up to $5.5 million.

The Patriots settled on their final 53 on Saturday, sticking with 23 offensive players, 27 defensive players and three special teamers. However, it’s almost a guarantee this list of 53 will not be the same roster they roll out for the season opener against the Dolphins in Miami on Sept. 12. The Patriots have always made moves between the final cuts and the start of the regular season, and given the way things shook out on Saturday (where they appear a little thin at guard and tight end), look for moves to be made sooner rather than later.

FOXBORO — The NFL opened training camps five weeks ago with an breathless flurry of activity.

When it comes to the Patriots, Jon Gruden has no doubt: The ESPN analyst believes that when it comes to the AFC, it begins with New England.

Most years, the preseason finale is the exclusive domain of the backups, the second- and third-teamers who are getting one last shot at a spot on the 53-man roster. In the wake of last week’s preseason loss to the Lions, some of the starters are expected to play Thursday night against the Giants. But there will be a collection of players on the bubble looking to make one final mark before the final round of cuts go down this weekend.

FOXBORO — You want to beat the Patriots? Beat up Tom Brady.

If it’s Monday, it must be time for another edition of roster reset. This is the third shot at predicting who will make the Patriots’ 53-man roster.
Christopher Price
08/28/2011 - 3:36am
In the third preseason game of 2010, the Patriots had plenty of issues: New England struggled defensively against a young Rams’ team that was coming off a sub-.500 season the year before, thanks in large part to an impressive performance by young quarterback Sam Bradford.
Christopher Price
08/26/2011 - 11:14pm
And so, here we are. The third game of the preseason is the dress rehearsal. It’s historically the final chance for the starters to show they’re ready for the regular season before the season opener.
Christopher Price
08/25/2011 - 8:54pm
FOXBORO — For all the talk about the Patriots’ renewed commitment to an aggressive pass rush this season, arguably their best and most consistent pass rusher over the last two seasons hasn’t seen action in New England’s first two preseason games.
Christopher Price
08/24/2011 - 9:49pm
FOXBORO — Everyone wants stability. Everyone is striving for permanence.

FOXBORO — It’s not easy being the new kid on the block, especially when you're a wide receiver trying to learn the Patriots’ offense.
Christopher Price
08/23/2011 - 12:09am
FOXBORO — It’s a different defense this season. The Patriots have bid adieu to the three-man fronts — which dictate more of a read-and-react situation — and have instead gone aggressive with four-man fronts this summer. Through its first two preseason games (as well as most of camp) New England has gone into more of an attack mode, and the results have paid off across the board — the Patriots have left Jacksonville and Tampa Bay quarterbacks' bruised and battered.
Christopher Price
08/22/2011 - 7:08pm
FOXBORO — Even though the calendar says August, the Patriots are starting to move into regular-season mode.
Christopher Price
08/21/2011 - 10:57pm
Here’s a second guess at what the Patriots’ 53-man roster will look like when they take the field three weeks from Monday for their regular-season opener against the Dolphins. There are a few changes from our first roster rundown, including at running back, tight end and on the defensive line. In addition, a flurry of personnel moves — the addition of players like Ricky Brown and James Ihedigbo, among them — have caused a few tweaks to who will be making the final 53.
Christopher Price
08/21/2011 - 11:39am
FOXBORO — Kyle Love’s game prep isn’t complete until he gets a text from his father. The son of a former Army officer, the words of wisdom are the jolt that the defensive tackle needs to get his head into the game. “Something to get me excited, some kind of words of encouragement,” Love said when asked what his Dad tells him.
Christopher Price
08/19/2011 - 2:44am
It had been a long time since Tom Brady had seen real action on a football field.
Christopher Price
08/17/2011 - 8:18pm
FOXBORO — The second NFL preseason game is usually the toughest one to call. There isn’t the getting-to-know-you process that comes with the  opener, and it still doesn’t have the intensity of the third preseason game. Coming off an opener where many starters didn't play at all, Thursday night should be a good opportunity for the Patriots to see where many of the veterans are at this stage of the preseason, as well as get a handle on how some of the rookies and other youngsters are shaping up.
Christopher Price
08/16/2011 - 11:17pm
FOXBORO — No team takes big bodies and turns them into NFL-ready offensive linemen like the Patriots. Over the years, New England has taken former college wrestlers, linemen from out of the way colleges like Southeast Missouri State and players who didn’t take up the game until high school and molded them into one of the most consistent offensive lines in the league.
