About Christopher Price

Christopher Price has covered the Boston sports scene for more then a dozen years, working for ESPN.com, SI.com and Baseball America as well as The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Miami Herald and Boston Metro. In that time, he’s established himself as an award-winning sportswriter who has been honored by Northeastern University, the New England Press Association and the North Carolina Press Association. In addition, he’s the author of the just published, “New England Patriots: The Complete Illustrated History” and two other books “Baseball by the Beach” and "The Blueprint: How the New England Patriots Beat the System to Create the Last Great NFL Superpower.”

FOXBORO -- It’s an autumn tradition in New England, like fall foliage or a moving truck getting stuck on Storrow Drive on Sept. 1: No matter how talented the Patriots might appear on paper, they inevitably suffer some sort of letdown over the first half of the season, usually to an opponent who is sitting and watching New England in the playoffs come January.

It's hard to imagine a team that keeps the same coach, offensive coordinator and quarterback in place could change its offense so dramatically from one season to the next, but the 2013 Patriots are about as far removed as they could be offensively from what they did last year.

If the 2013 Patriots do turn out to be a championship team, we can look back on the Sept. 29 game against the Falcons in the Georgia Dome as the night where they took a sizable step forward.

Bell cow. Feature back. Lead dog. No matter what you call them, at one time or another over the last 13 years, Antowain Smith, Corey Dillon, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Stevan Ridley all established themselves as the No. 1 running back with the Patriots.

The Patriots travel to Atlanta Sunday night to face the Falcons, one of the better offenses in the league. Despite their 1-2 mark, Matt Ryan and Atlanta enter the contest ninth in the league in total offense (379 yards per game) and 12th in the league in points per game (23.7 points per game).

With three games in the books, we’re starting to get a clearer picture of how the 2013 Patriots are coming together -- even without some of the most important faces on the offensive side of the ball.
