FOXBORO — Down the tunnel they came, one after the other, happy Jets’ players making airplane noises. With their arms outstretched, they pretended to fly from the field to the tunnel to the locker room, singing and laughing. Antonio Cromartie led the way, followed closely by teammates like Trevor Pryce and Bart Scott, joyfully gliding down the tunnel toward the visitors’ locker room at Gillette Stadium.

Don’t suggest to Patriots coach Bill Belichick that the first two games New England and New York played earlier this season will have much of an effect on the third game, set for Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Instead, like all great trilogies, the third chapter might surprise some people.

FOXBORO — Adam Vinatieri and Lonie Paxton were playoff heroes for the Patriots, posting clutch performances in the postseason on several occasions to lift New England to greatness. Along the way, Shayne Graham and Matt Katula couldn’t help but notice the heroics.

FOXBORO — The first real indication that 14-2 might be truly in the rearview came Wednesday morning with a film session that was more critical than anything Roger Ebert could have dreamed up. “There was a lot of stuff that was pointed out,” said wide receiver Deion Branch shortly after the session wrapped up.

So much of the success of this year’s Patriots team has been a multigenerational effort, with rookies and second-year players meshing well with established veterans. It’s produced a 14-2 regular-season record and the top seed in the AFC playoff race.

Rest versus rust. It’s an age-old debate that’s been faced by every NFL team that’s locked into a playoff spot before the end of the regular season. Do you give your starters the week off, resting them ostensibly to keep them healthy for the postseason?

FOXBORO — It’s difficult to measure the impact of a single offensive lineman — there are no easy go-to stats. But since Logan Mankins returned to the Patriots last month, there’s an undeniable edge to the New England offensive line, and a large portion of that has been provided by the Pro Bowl left guard.
