FOXBORO -- Intangibles like swagger, intensity and attitude can be difficult to measure, but if early returns are any indication, it appears the 2014 Patriots defense won’t have an issue when it comes to playing with an edge.

It can be a fool’s errand to try to put together a depth chart at this time of the season for any one position. Despite the fact that free agency and the draft are in the rearview mirror, there’s still plenty left between now and the start of the season when it comes to the team-building process.

The arrival of Jimmy Garoppolo has sparked plenty of conversation about the Patriots and their plans for a post-Tom Brady world. While the incumbent signal-caller, who turns 37 in August, has stated he wants to play for several more years, it’s only natural to start to think about the transition.

Are the Patriots better now than they were at the start of free agency? As the first wave of this portion of the team-building comes to a close, they've certainly shown improvement -- particularly when it comes to their secondary -- but at the same time, it’s important to remember that the process of crafting the final 2014 roster is far from finished.
