And so, here we are. The third game of the preseason is the dress rehearsal. It’s historically the final chance for the starters to show they’re ready for the regular season before the season opener.

FOXBORO — For all the talk about the Patriots’ renewed commitment to an aggressive pass rush this season, arguably their best and most consistent pass rusher over the last two seasons hasn’t seen action in New England’s first two preseason games.

FOXBORO — Everyone wants stability. Everyone is striving for permanence.

FOXBORO — It’s not easy being the new kid on the block, especially when you're a wide receiver trying to learn the Patriots’ offense.

FOXBORO — It’s a different defense this season. The Patriots have bid adieu to the three-man fronts — which dictate more of a read-and-react situation — and have instead gone aggressive with four-man fronts this summer. Through its first two preseason games (as well as most of camp) New England has gone into more of an attack mode, and the results have paid off across the board — the Patriots have left Jacksonville and Tampa Bay quarterbacks' bruised and battered.

FOXBORO — Even though the calendar says August, the Patriots are starting to move into regular-season mode.

Here’s a second guess at what the Patriots’ 53-man roster will look like when they take the field three weeks from Monday for their regular-season opener against the Dolphins. There are a few changes from our first roster rundown, including at running back, tight end and on the defensive line. In addition, a flurry of personnel moves — the addition of players like Ricky Brown and James Ihedigbo, among them — have caused a few tweaks to who will be making the final 53.

FOXBORO — Kyle Love’s game prep isn’t complete until he gets a text from his father. The son of a former Army officer, the words of wisdom are the jolt that the defensive tackle needs to get his head into the game. “Something to get me excited, some kind of words of encouragement,” Love said when asked what his Dad tells him.

It had been a long time since Tom Brady had seen real action on a football field.
Christopher Price
08/17/2011 - 8:18pm
FOXBORO — The second NFL preseason game is usually the toughest one to call. There isn’t the getting-to-know-you process that comes with the  opener, and it still doesn’t have the intensity of the third preseason game. Coming off an opener where many starters didn't play at all, Thursday night should be a good opportunity for the Patriots to see where many of the veterans are at this stage of the preseason, as well as get a handle on how some of the rookies and other youngsters are shaping up.
Christopher Price
08/16/2011 - 11:17pm
FOXBORO — No team takes big bodies and turns them into NFL-ready offensive linemen like the Patriots. Over the years, New England has taken former college wrestlers, linemen from out of the way colleges like Southeast Missouri State and players who didn’t take up the game until high school and molded them into one of the most consistent offensive lines in the league.
Christopher Price
08/16/2011 - 12:15am
FOXBORO — For the Patriots, this training camp has been all about big names: Ochocinco! Albert! Mankins! Brady!
Christopher Price
08/14/2011 - 7:38pm
Four weeks from Monday, the 2011 Patriots will meet the Dolphins in Miami in the regular-season opener. With the understanding that things could change dramatically between now and then, after two-plus weeks of training camp and a preseason game against Jacksonville, here’s our best guess as to what the 53-man roster is going to look like against the Dolphins:
Christopher Price
08/12/2011 - 3:24am
FOXBORO — He stands in the longest shadow in the NFL, but every preseason, Brian Hoyer continues to remind people why he could be one of the most underrated players on the New England roster.

FOXBORO — Football has returned.
Christopher Price
08/10/2011 - 1:00am
FOXBORO — Since he arrived in New England via a trade with Cincinnati on July 28, there have been two distinctly different Chad Ochocincos.
Christopher Price
08/09/2011 - 1:03am
FOXBORO — The Patriots ended the 2010 season with just eight healthy defensive linemen. Now, they have almost three times that many in training camp. The acquisitions of both Shaun Ellis and Andre Carter, as well as the return of Gerard Warren, were made official on Monday, brining the total number of defensive lineman on New England’s current roster to 21.
Christopher Price
08/05/2011 - 12:53am
FOXBORO — Like a protagonist in a Clint Eastwood Western, Logan Mankins has never been much for small talk. Case in point: When he was asked Thursday why he signed his one-year, $10.1 million franchise tender so quickly, Mankins responded with a small smirk.
Christopher Price
08/02/2011 - 6:24pm
FOXBORO — Few coaches are better at helping troubled NFL stars author a successful second act that Bill Belichick, and Albert Haynesworth is hoping that the Patriots coach can do it again.
Christopher Price
07/30/2011 - 1:51pm
FOXBORO — A relatively subdued Chad Ochocinco met the New England media for the first time following his first padded practice with the Patriots on Saturday morning, and while he was his usual quotable self — “Can I get a group hug, real quick from everybody?” he asked at the end of his six-minute Q&A with reporters — it sounded like the colorful wide receiver about to undergo a serious personality transplant.
Christopher Price
07/29/2011 - 8:47pm
FOXBORO — The guy who drew most of the attention at Patriots’ practice Friday morning wasn’t even dressed for football.
Christopher Price
07/28/2011 - 7:10pm
FOXBORO — The addition of Chad Ochocinco to the Patriots brings a new dimension to the New England passing game, one the Patriots have lacked since Randy Moss was dealt last October: A big receiver.
Christopher Price
07/28/2011 - 2:40pm
FOXBORO — It only took a few moments to realize that training camp had changed.
Christopher Price
07/28/2011 - 12:35am
With training camp set to open for real on Thursday morning, the Patriots face the same amount of questions as any one of the other 31 teams in the league. We asked you for your top concerns, and in a modified mailbag, here are some of the readers’ most important questions — solicited via Twitter — facing the 2011 Patriots as the season gets underway: @pfitz7: Who is going to rush the passer for the Pats this year?

07/26/2011 - 2:51pm
FOXBORO — It was back to the business of football Tuesday morning at Gillette Stadium, as the Patriots returned to work for the first time since the NFL lockout ended.
