If you’re a left tackle, the more anonymous you are, the better. If you’re doing your job, you never want anyone to say anything. Usually, the only time a left tackle's name is mentioned is when he gets his quarterback demolished. Like a baseball umpire, if no one mentions your name, you’re probably doing your job correctly.

The Patriots have a history of looking past the combine and going after some unheralded college talent. In the past, that’s allowed them to find players like Julian Edelman and Sebastian Vollmer.

While coaches will tell you the status of every member of their current roster dictates their approach in the NFL draft, no player will have a greater impact on how the Patriots operate this week than defensive back Devin McCourty.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Patriots have to get younger at wider receiver. They haven’t been able to develop a consistent young presence at the position in a decade. So what does New England do this offseason?

INDIANAPOLIS -- When it came to their front seven, the Patriots showed multiple defensive looks last season, shuffling between a three-man front and a four-man front depending on personnel and opponent.

The combine is one of the most underrated events on the NFL calendar. A rare opportunity for the media to meet with top-flight prospects, coaches, personnel men and agents, it’s the real kickoff to an offseason that will continue with the start of free agency, league meetings and the draft.

Just two weeks after the Super Bowl, the NFL offseason kicks into high gear this week. Teams can start placing the franchise tag on players Monday (a process that concludes March 5), and starting Thursday, the Patriots will join the rest of the league at the annual scouting combine in Indianapolis. The two events mark the start of the team-building process for the 2012 season.
