FOXBORO -- Bill Belichick is a sports fan, so when he was asked Sunday afternoon about how things changed for Ryan Mallett over the weekend, it wasn’t a surprise to hear him use a baseball analogy.

With the understanding that things can change between now and the start of the regular season, here are a few thoughts on what was a whirlwind day for the Patriots and their roster:

By 9 p.m. on Friday, every team in the NFL has to be down to 53 players. While there will be movement after the deadline -- remember that the Patriots picked up Brian Waters, Danny Aiken, A.J.

The final preseason game of the year offers all sorts of intriguing storylines for the Patriots.

08/27/2012 - 10:14pm
With Monday’s cuts, the Patriots have started narrowing the field in an attempt to get down to 53 before the Friday deadline. With our initial roster projections now in shambles with Monday’s moves, here’s another shot at who is going to survive, with a few practice squad candidates tossed in for good measure. OFFENSE (25)

The third preseason game is the dress rehearsal, the one that everyone points to as the final chance for the starters to get their work in before kicking back and watching the preseason finale.
Christopher Price
08/23/2012 - 2:35pm
With another week of preseason in the books, there are more changes to our final 53-man roster. With some clarity regarding the status of linebacker Dane Fletcher and defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene, things have started to become a little clearer on the defensive side of the ball.
Christopher Price
08/22/2012 - 11:03am
With the Patriots in a stretch of three games in 10 days and the first round of cuts looming in less than a week, a handful of players have to maximize their opportunities in the limited amount of practice time they have.
Christopher Price
08/21/2012 - 4:27am
FOXBORO -- It was the unquestioned low point of the night for a Patriots’ offensive line that has already had a few of them this summer.
Christopher Price
08/19/2012 - 5:23pm
In the second preseason game, things get a little more exciting, as starters usually play for nearly a half, while with the first series of cuts looming in just over a week (rosters must be down to 80 by Aug. 27), the snaps become so much more important for the guys on the roster bubble.
Christopher Price
08/17/2012 - 12:44am
FOXBORO -- While there’s always a bit of an edge at training camp -- the constant heat, humidity and crashing into the same guys over and over again would leave even the Dalai Lama short-tempered -- this summer, there’s been plenty of fight in these Patriots.
Christopher Price

FOXBORO -- If there’s any team that can handle a crowded receivers’ meeting room, it’s the Patriots.
Christopher Price
08/14/2012 - 1:07am
FOXBORO -- Whether he gets a chance to play out his entire career in a Patriots uniform or ends up finishing with another franchise, there will be a day when Tom Brady is no longer the Patriots’ quarterback. And with Brady turning 35 earlier this month, that day will come sooner rather than later.

FOXBORO -- When it comes to the first game of the preseason, different players have different goals. While some rookies are just looking to get their feet wet, others will be tested to see how they do in their first relatively competitive action in the NFL.

FOXBORO -- We’ve been here before: High-powered NFL team gets enmeshed in scandal and receives massive penalties from the league. Meanwhile, critics doubt their success and ask whether or not it will prevent future glory.

FOXBORO -- Ferrari or Rolls-Royce? Godfather or GoodFellas? Five Guys or In-N-Out Burger? These are debates with no wrong answer.
Christopher Price
08/07/2012 - 12:33am
FOXBORO -- Prior to the start of camp, we took a look at five guys who were on the hot seat when it came to making the 53-man roster.
Christopher Price
08/06/2012 - 3:29pm
FOXBORO -- For the Patriots’ secondary, the low point of the 2011 season came when former New England defensive back Rodney Harrison went all Comic Book Guy (“Worst Secondary Ever”) on the group in December.
Christopher Price
08/06/2012 - 12:04am
FOXBORO -- The comparisons make a lot of sense: the 2012 Patriots have just as many talented skill positions players as the 2007 team.
Christopher Price
08/02/2012 - 11:50pm
FOXBORO -- Just over a month ago, we took a look at some of the positional battles we were most excited to see in Patriots training camp. Now, one week into camp, we take a look at how some of those battles are shaping up.
