INDIANAPOLIS -- Like worshippers on a religious pilgrimage, young quarterbacks continue to seek out Tom Brady in hopes of finding out the secret to success in the NFL.

The NFL’s best and the brightest will descend on Indy this weekend in hopes of finding the next great prospect at the annual scouting combine. When it comes to the Patriots and how they navigate the Underwear Olympics, you’ve got questions. Luckily for you, we have answers. WHAT DRILLS SHOULD PATRIOTS FANS PAY ATTENTION TO?

So, what really changed Sunday night? Prior to Sunday, Missouri defensive end Michael Sam was thought of as a relatively highly regarded prospect. The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year, the 6-foot-2, 255-pounder finished the 2013 season with 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss, and he attained All-America status as a result. Now he has the chance to become the first openly gay player in the NFL and challenge some of the conventional narratives that surround the league.

By the time the Seahawks and Broncos take the field for Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday in North Jersey, it will have been two weeks since the Patriots’ last game of the season, so you can pardon local football fans if they’ve checked out mentally over the last 14 days.

01/27/2014 - 11:45pm
The Broncos and Seahawks have reached North Jersey this winter with different management styles, but in their roster construction, they certainly offer some teachable tools for the Patriots to consider -- so many, in fact, that an adjustment in New England’s team-building approach could mean that the Patriots could be the ones celebrating amidst the confetti at the end of

It’s always a pleasure to get some additional insight into the game from a scout -- they offer a perspective on life in the NFL that we rarely see. With that in mind, we asked an NFC scout who watched plenty of Patriots’ games this year about some points of emphasis for New England heading into the offseason. Fundamentally, if they were in charge of running things at Gillette Stadium, what direction would you go?
Christopher Price

Throughout the offseason, we’ll check in frequently on New England’s free agent class. Here’s the first look at the group of players who were with the Patriots in 2013 but aren’t under contract to the team going forward, as well as a thumbnail sketch about their respective situations and their chances of returning.

FOXBORO -- Tom Brady healed up pretty quickly from whatever bug was bothering him over the last week or so -- after being listed on Wednesday’s injury report with “right shoulder/illness,” his name disappeared from Thursday’s report completely.

FOXBORO -- Aqib Talib, mentor?

FOXBORO -- The Patriots have always been known as a team with some level of offensive flexibility, but regardless of what happens in Sunday’s AFC title game against the Broncos, the 2013 team will ultimately be remembered as an offensive chameleon, able to change from week to week with an amazing dexterity.
Christopher Price
01/12/2014 - 6:46am
FOXBORO -- The Patriots didn’t wear their throwbacks uniforms this year, but Saturday night would have been a good time to bust out a vintage New England jersey from 2001, 2003 or 2004.

FOXBORO -- If you want to know how to make movies, you ask Steven Spielberg. Got a question about making money, call Bill Gates. And if you have a question about toughness, you go to Logan Mankins.

FOXBORO -- This past offseason, Aqib Talib bet on himself. But while he’s had an impressive regular season, he knows that a big playoff performance could mean a big payoff sooner rather than later.
Christopher Price
01/07/2014 - 12:50am
For the last 20 years or so, the formula for a championship offense was simple: elite quarterback, standout skill position players at wide receiver and/or tight end, and singular feature back who was capable of 250 to 300 carries a year to help carry the load on the ground. Lather, rinse, repeat.

FOXBORO -- No team in the AFC will rely more on its rookies to get it through the postseason than the Patriots.
Christopher Price
12/30/2013 - 3:40am
FOXBORO -- Aqib Talib couldn’t stop smiling.  The cornerback, who helped extricate running back LeGarrette Blount from Tampa Bay this past spring, was standing at his locker Sunday night in the moments after the Patriots beat the Bills, 34-20, to wrap up the second seed in the AFC. On a cold and soggy afternoon, New England put the game on the shoulders of Blount, and he responded with a career-high 189 yards on 24 carries, as well as two touchdowns.

BALTIMORE -- The roar told you everything you needed to know. Early Sunday night, deep within the bowels of M&T Bank Stadium, the Patriots had just vanquished the Ravens by a 41-7 count, and there was some celebrating going on. As the media stood outside the New England locker room, an audible cheer could be heard inside. The hats and T-shirts had been handed out -- the division title had been clinched -- and the questions as to whether or not the Patriots could go on the road and deliver a signature game against a worthy opponent had been answered.
Christopher Price
12/19/2013 - 5:08pm
FOXBORO -- “Friggin’ Baltimore,” said Tom Brady with a sigh. Brady has good reason to feel that way about the Ravens, as Baltimore has been the only team that has consistently been able to slow down the Patriots quarterback over the years. Players and defensive coordinators have come and gone, and while he does have a 5-3 record against Baltimore, whenever Brady has looked across the line and seen purple and black, it’s been a struggle.
Christopher Price
12/19/2013 - 12:29am
FOXBORO -- The last two years, the Patriots offense has been the football equivalent of high-speed DSL. This year, it’s been more like old-school dial-up.
Christopher Price
12/17/2013 - 1:08am
For a Patriots team that had played well in the clutch and embraced big moments over most of the first 13 games, seeing breakdowns in all three phases of the game down the stretch Sunday was a surprise. Even for them.
Christopher Price
12/16/2013 - 12:53am
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- For the Patriots, opportunity wasn’t just knocking. It was beating the door off the hinges. The division title was in their sights. The hats and T-shirts were somewhere in the building, ready for a trip back to New England. In addition, the first step on the inevitable march to the No. 1 seed in the AFC -- and home field throughout the postseason -- was there for the taking, courtesy of Denver’s loss to San Diego on Thursday.
