For the last couple of years, the Patriots have searched for a linebacker who could work in coverage.

Nope. Don’t think so. Keep moving. Patriots coach Bill Belichick needs to resist what must be a powerful impulse and make the decision not to sign Tim Tebow.

When the Patriots swung and missed -- although, to be fair, it was sort of a check swing, called third strike -- on their pursuit of Emmanuel Sanders this spring, they tipped their hand to the fact that, as things stand right now, they’re still not satisfied with the state of their receiving corps.

With the 2013 draft looming, we decided to take a look back at the 18 finest selections of the Bill Belichick era in New England. The rules for inclusion are fairly standard -- a player had to be drafted by the Patriots from when Belichick took control in 2000 until the present day.

Trying to figure out if a college quarterback can succeed at the next level can be a dicey proposition, but in a 2010 story for Sports Illustrated, writer John Lopez came up with a simple formula for predicting success or failure with what he called the rule of 26-27-60. Lopez wrote that if a quarterback scored at least a 26 on the Wonderlic test, started at least 27 college games and completed at least 60 percent of his passes as a collegian, “there’s a good chance he will succeed at the NFL level.”

The departure of Wes Welker (and possibly Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman and Deion Branch) and the arrival of new faces like Donald Jones and Danny Amendola heralds a fundamental change in the Patriots passing game -- on the current roster, there are no wide receivers who caught a pass from quarterback

The Patriots have been quite adept at finding players who might have operated out of pre-draft spotlight because they didn’t get an invite to the combine: Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Danny Woodhead, Troy Brown,

By the time his career is done, no Hall of Fame quarterback of the modern era will have gone through more personnel changes in the passing game than Tom Brady.

Two months ago, just after the Patriots season came to an end at the hands of the Ravens in the AFC title game, we asked an NFC scout who had broken down extensive film on New England over the course of the 2012 season for an offseason to-do list for the Patriots. He came up with the following areas of need for New England: safety, wide receiver and pass rusher.

The first six days of free agency have seen a dizzying pace of activity throughout the NFL. As for the Patriots, they’ve said goodbye to a pair of high-profile receivers and added two others, and also made some interesting moves on the defensive side of the ball.

If there’s one guy who really understands the differences and similarities between Wes Welker and Danny Amendola, it’s Dana Holgorsen. The West Virginia coach worked with both of them when he was a receivers coach -- and later, an offensive coordinator -- at Texas Tech. And on Thursday, he told the NFL Network that any comparisons between the two are “unfair.”

Because the receiver wasn’t hit with the franchise tag for the second consecutive season, it’s been hard to figure out which direction Wes Welker and the Patriots are headed when it comes to a new deal for the receiver.

Dale isn't buying the Tortorella hype and thinks he's a little overrated. DJ thinks he's a good coach, but isn't a fan of anti-media stance. The guys also talk about Jagr and how he has not lived up to the hype. They weren't expecting him to light it up or be the savior, but DJ says he wasn't prepared for just how slow the aging veteran is. Another big topic for B's fans this season is the play of Tyler Seguin and why he has yet to become the superstar everyone anticipates he will be. This leads to Claude Julien's style and if he does actually have something against the younger players. That Iginla trade shows its ugly head again as well.
