About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

NEW YORK -- The All-Star Game proved the day of The Closer, a moment for the baseball world to offer center stage to the great Mariano Rivera and afford the ninth-inning legend the opportunity to take a bow.

NEW YORK -- The dynamic is a fascinating one.  In the short-term, there is some admitted uncertainty from the Red Sox about what they have on the left side of their infield, an area of instability this year.

In some ways, it seems appropriate that Brandon Workman could not get through even a full week of his big league career without shuffling between the rotation and the bullpen. After all, when he was an amateur, the debate about whether he was better-suited for life as a starter or reliever was a polarizing one.

For years, it's been a dirty word in the eyes of the public. The mere notion has offended plenty of sensibilities throughout New England.  "Bridge."

With Andrew Miller almost certainly done for the year, how can the Red Sox replace one of the most overpowering left-handers in the game? The task isn't easy.

It now looms in plain view, growing ever larger on the horizon. The baseball calendar has now arrived at its annual month of mayhem, with frenzied discussion of the trade market for players bound to consume the game with growing intensity through July 31.

The Red Sox and Clay Buchholz tried to grasp at the silver lining, clinging to the notion that the pitcher continues to make incremental progress in his recovery from the strained trapezius muscle that has now kept him out for nearly th

Perhaps it's because Ryan Dempster is so unassuming that it is so easy to overlook his accomplishments on the mound. Or maybe, even in an age where a pitcher's won-loss record is understood to be a poor measure of his performance, it's because the right-hander wears a 5-9 mark at this stage of the season.

This isn’t a matter of the emperor not having any clothes. But, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that he has a new wardrobe. Perhaps it’s simply time to accept that Jon Lester is no longer the same pitcher that he was at his dominating best from 2008 through 2011.

By this point, you've probably heard that Red Sox top prospect Xander Bogaerts has now been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. And by this point, you've probably heard that Bogaerts is a potential superstar-in-the-making -- one of the top prospects in all of the minors, if not the top prospect.

Left-hander Trey Ball entered the season being viewed as the consensus best two-way player in the draft, someone worthy of early-round status as an outfielder or pitcher. But the mystery surrounding his potential career path lasted about as long as his first outing of the year.

The Red Sox recognize that they have access to a different pool of talents in this year's draft than at any other point in recent memory. The team hasn't picked as high as No.

Yes, yes, it's early. Yes, there are still more than 100 games to go in the regular season.
