About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

The Red Sox and Clay Buchholz tried to grasp at the silver lining, clinging to the notion that the pitcher continues to make incremental progress in his recovery from the strained trapezius muscle that has now kept him out for nearly th

Perhaps it's because Ryan Dempster is so unassuming that it is so easy to overlook his accomplishments on the mound. Or maybe, even in an age where a pitcher's won-loss record is understood to be a poor measure of his performance, it's because the right-hander wears a 5-9 mark at this stage of the season.

This isn’t a matter of the emperor not having any clothes. But, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that he has a new wardrobe. Perhaps it’s simply time to accept that Jon Lester is no longer the same pitcher that he was at his dominating best from 2008 through 2011.

By this point, you've probably heard that Red Sox top prospect Xander Bogaerts has now been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. And by this point, you've probably heard that Bogaerts is a potential superstar-in-the-making -- one of the top prospects in all of the minors, if not the top prospect.

In his first spring training with the Red Sox in 2010, young shortstop Jose Iglesias would sometimes show up unannounced at the house of then-minor league hitting coordinator Victor Rodriguez, He wanted to discuss hitting, to learn, to thin

Left-hander Trey Ball entered the season being viewed as the consensus best two-way player in the draft, someone worthy of early-round status as an outfielder or pitcher. But the mystery surrounding his potential career path lasted about as long as his first outing of the year.

The Red Sox recognize that they have access to a different pool of talents in this year's draft than at any other point in recent memory. The team hasn't picked as high as No.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- He is the constant. When he does not feel good, he contributes. When no one else is hitting, he often is the one who seems intent on singlehandedly pulling the team out of its adversity. If there is a player who can be described as doing something every day to help his team win, he is it.
