About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

A year ago at this time, the Red Sox looked like a team whose brake lines had been cut with several collisions behind them and several more, even larger ones, looming ahead.

David Price and Matt Moore were one thing. One is the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, the other an All-Star this year.

By now you may or may not have seen Xander Bogaerts. But you've heard about him, and you likely have a set of expectations about what he can do.

In this universe, the fact that Jon Lester is taking the mound for the Red Sox in Kansas City on Thursday represents something of a rarity.

08/05/2013 - 9:44am
Just a week ago, it would have been hard to envision the Red Sox rotation looking as strong as any in the American League.

So, about that bullpen ... This is the way it works. The days immediately before and after the trade deadline, teams are viewed through the prism of what they did and did not do in the hours leading up to July 31.

Now, finally, after nine years as teammates, there are two paths divergent.

The Red Sox enter the start of the second half with the best record in the American League, a mark built upon solid across-the-board performances that have made it seem as if the team doesn't have a glaring deficiency at any single positi

NEW YORK -- The All-Star Game proved the day of The Closer, a moment for the baseball world to offer center stage to the great Mariano Rivera and afford the ninth-inning legend the opportunity to take a bow.
Alex Speier
07/15/2013 - 6:07am
NEW YORK -- The dynamic is a fascinating one.  In the short-term, there is some admitted uncertainty from the Red Sox about what they have on the left side of their infield, an area of instability this year.

07/14/2013 - 5:19am
In some ways, it seems appropriate that Brandon Workman could not get through even a full week of his big league career without shuffling between the rotation and the bullpen. After all, when he was an amateur, the debate about whether he was better-suited for life as a starter or reliever was a polarizing one.

For years, it's been a dirty word in the eyes of the public. The mere notion has offended plenty of sensibilities throughout New England.  "Bridge."
Alex Speier
07/10/2013 - 6:56am
With Andrew Miller almost certainly done for the year, how can the Red Sox replace one of the most overpowering left-handers in the game? The task isn't easy.

It now looms in plain view, growing ever larger on the horizon. The baseball calendar has now arrived at its annual month of mayhem, with frenzied discussion of the trade market for players bound to consume the game with growing intensity through July 31.
