About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

With Andrew Miller almost certainly done for the year, how can the Red Sox replace one of the most overpowering left-handers in the game? The task isn't easy.

It now looms in plain view, growing ever larger on the horizon. The baseball calendar has now arrived at its annual month of mayhem, with frenzied discussion of the trade market for players bound to consume the game with growing intensity through July 31.

It is a name that is as pleasing as it is misleading.

The Red Sox and Clay Buchholz tried to grasp at the silver lining, clinging to the notion that the pitcher continues to make incremental progress in his recovery from the strained trapezius muscle that has now kept him out for nearly three weeks.

Perhaps it's because Ryan Dempster is so unassuming that it is so easy to overlook his accomplishments on the mound. Or maybe, even in an age where a pitcher's won-loss record is understood to be a poor measure of his performance, it's because the right-hander wears a 5-9 mark at this stage of the season.
Alex Speier
06/25/2013 - 10:24am
The sight was puzzling.  A Red Sox batter, taking early batting practice, stood in the right side of the batter's box, whacking one ball after another off the Green Monster. Then, he crossed over to the other side of the plate and lined a few balls off of the scoreboard in left-center to wrap up his pregame work.

This isn’t a matter of the emperor not having any clothes. But, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that he has a new wardrobe. Perhaps it’s simply time to accept that Jon Lester is no longer the same pitcher that he was at his dominating best from 2008 through 2011.

By this point, you've probably heard that Red Sox top prospect Xander Bogaerts has now been promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Left-hander Trey Ball entered the season being viewed as the consensus best two-way player in the draft, someone worthy of early-round status as an outfielder or pitcher. But the mystery surrounding his potential career path lasted about as long as his first outing of the year.
Alex Speier
06/06/2013 - 2:39am
The Red Sox recognize that they have access to a different pool of talents in this year's draft than at any other point in recent memory. The team hasn't picked as high as No.
Alex Speier
06/05/2013 - 7:42am
Yes, yes, it's early. Yes, there are still more than 100 games to go in the regular season.
Alex Speier
06/04/2013 - 7:59am
The Red Sox did not merely dip their toe into the free agent pool last offseason so much as they dove in wearing scuba gear. Now, more than a third of the way into the season, the identity of their most impactful acquisition -- and indeed, quite likely the most impactful free agent signed by anyone -- is a familiar one.
