About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

BALTIMORE -- For the Red Sox rotation, the present is a question mark and an even more uncertain future looms.

Forget the absurd trade scenarios. Forget the Dodgers' bad contracts. Forget Mike Stanton. Forget acquiring Mike Trout in exchange for a pair of prospects.

This is what it means to go for upside.

How big a deal is the amateur draft? Ask Stephen Drew.
Alex Speier
06/03/2014 - 1:52am
And so, the shuffle continued, a new wrinkle in a season that has upended the stable managing environment in which John Farrell helped to steward the Red Sox to a championship in 2013.
Alex Speier
06/01/2014 - 7:59am
There has never been a question about the raw materials that Rubby De La Rosa possesses, about the capability to deliver the sort of performances like he did on Saturday night when he fired seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts in leading the Red Sox to a 7-1 win over the Rays.
Alex Speier
05/30/2014 - 7:43am
These are the first glimpses of potential greatness. We do not know what Xander Bogaerts will become. There are no certainties when it comes to phenoms who storm the baseball landscape. The line of prospects who never lived up to the glimpses of boundless early-career potential is long.
Alex Speier
05/29/2014 - 8:04am
Vivid 10-year-old memories flooded Fenway Park on Wednesday, the reunion of the 2004 Red Sox championship team conjuring thoughts of games and moments within games that still seemed as if they just ended.
Alex Speier
05/23/2014 - 6:58am
It is a time of painful uncertainty in the career of Will Middlebrooks.
Alex Speier
05/22/2014 - 8:03am
There's a tendency to view Clay Buchholz's struggles this year as unfathomable, unimaginable given what he's done in his career. The reality is that what the Red Sox have seen thus far in 2014 is very familiar.
Alex Speier
05/21/2014 - 9:16am
It is not merely a position but an identity. And so it was that the news that the Red Sox had re-signed Stephen Drew crashed down upon Xander Bogaerts like a ton of bricks.
Alex Speier
05/21/2014 - 12:20am
Despite their early-season struggles, the Red Sox had received a measure of stability from at least one corner of their team. Through 44 games (including Tuesday night's 7-4 shellacking at the hands of the Blue Jays), the team had employed only five starters throughout the entirety of the year.
Alex Speier
05/20/2014 - 8:31am
In the winter after 2012, the Red Sox rolled seven after seven in the construction of their team.
Alex Speier
05/18/2014 - 1:45am
The good news for the Red Sox is that one out of every three games, they've been as good as nearly any team in the American League.
Alex Speier
05/17/2014 - 7:53am
The Red Sox understood that when they committed to youth, to a lineup featuring three players who are 25 years old or younger, that they would be vulnerable to more pronounced peaks and valleys than might have typified their lineup a year ago. That, the team felt, was worth the upside.
Alex Speier
05/15/2014 - 10:16am
Woe betide the team that crosses David Ortiz. The man appears to hold a grudge.
Alex Speier
05/13/2014 - 2:34am
It has been nearly 10 years since Craig Breslow stood prepared to give up the diversion of baseball in pursuit of something higher-minded.
Alex Speier
05/09/2014 - 8:18am
When the Red Sox signed Mike Napoli away from the Rangers following the 2012 season, there was little complexity about his profile. The man could mash.  As for the finer points of the game? Whatever.
Alex Speier
05/07/2014 - 2:04am
As Red Sox teammates swarmed Grady Sizemore at second base following his first walk-off hit in eight seasons, the alternate reality was impossible to ignore.
Alex Speier
05/05/2014 - 7:36am
In a different world, might Sonny Gray's trip to the mound at Fenway on Sunday have been as a member of the Red Sox as opposed to against them as a member of the A's? Such a scenario very easily could have come to pass.
Alex Speier
05/03/2014 - 1:57am
Long ago, before the birth of the Laser Show, there were nonetheless hints that there was something . . . different about the way that the ball came off of Dustin Pedroia's bat.

It is hard to imagine a more dispiriting circumstance than getting swept in a doubleheader.

He anticipates the question before it is asked. But he doesn't know the answer.
Alex Speier
04/25/2014 - 8:02am
This is what it means to live through player development at the major league level. This is what it means to have young players at key positions who are making their transitions, rather than established veterans who represent known quantities.

There was Jacoby Ellsbury, performing in familiar roles and familiar fashion.
