About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

On a day when Clay Buchholz helped the Red Sox to complete one of their best turns of the rotation in the past 64 years, it was nonetheless the bullpen that provided the game’s foremost drama and intrigue.

The Red Sox said all spring that their best lineup features Jacoby Ellsbury as a leadoff hitter. Monday might be a good time for them to start testing that hypothesis again.

04/16/2011 - 4:00am
It started as a day of coronation for Adrian Gonzalez as a player worthy of joining the $100 million club, and ended with doubts about whether another player who will receive comparable piles of cash from the Red Sox can earn his keep.

Scott Cordischi and John Rooke take your calls, texts, tweets and emails on the week's hot topics. The boys are back together in studio! It’s a bittersweet reunion due to the end of the NCAABB Tournament run for the PC Friars, so we say “see you next season” to the play by play team of John Rooke and Joe Hassett. We don’t waste time looking ahead with the issues confronting the men’s basketball program at URI and PC. On the table is the argument over the validity of RPI, outgoing coveted players, incoming recruits and whether Coaches Dan Hurley and Ed Cooley will remain after their successful 2014 season. Some time is spent on the NFL owners meetings, with the whiny Baltimore Ravens and a ranting Bill Belichick. We close March in all it’s madness, with “Three Things” where we celebrate the open mic and a young man’s passion .
