About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

Ho-hum. The storyline has been heard before. In retrospect, perhaps the most surprising thing about it was simply the fact that there was surprise at the trajectory being taken by Dustin Pedroia’s season.
Alex Speier
06/11/2011 - 2:36am
As they prepared for the 2011 season, most observers considered the Red Sox a strong club that possessed an obvious flaw.

06/07/2011 - 6:00am
A year ago, the Red Sox went to the Cape to see if their much-hyped draft pick Anthony Ranaudo once again looked like a top college pitcher. What they saw was a hurler who looked very much like he was rounding back into his top-of-the-rotation form…and an opponent who was even more dominant.
Alex Speier
06/05/2011 - 7:00am
J.D. Drew came to the Red Sox as part of an ambitious offseason makeover that was expected to help a team that missed the playoffs renew its pursuit of World Series.

There might be a couple of late-season starts in 2012, and according to manager Terry Francona, Daisuke Matsuzaka remains driven to help the

06/02/2011 - 7:13am
For now, multiple baseball sources said late Wednesday night, there is no final decision about what will happen with Daisuke Matsuzaka, or whether he will undergo Tommy John surgery that could spell the end of his Red Sox

06/01/2011 - 6:00am
Adrian Gonzalez inspired awe with his performance in the month of May. But he was not the Red Sox slugger who had the best 31-day stretch.
Alex Speier
05/28/2011 - 3:00am
In retrospect, it will be viewed as a somewhat confounding development.
Alex Speier
05/27/2011 - 12:10pm
In the final days of spring training, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein took stock of his roster.
Alex Speier
05/26/2011 - 9:11am
A baseball season features its full complement of ups and downs, and everyone seems to have a metaphor to try to explain the phenomenon.
Alex Speier
05/25/2011 - 2:00am
That Rich Hill etched a place in Red Sox history without any fanfare seems appropriate. The mild-mannered 31-year-old is hardly eager to draw attention to his accomplishments.
Alex Speier
05/22/2011 - 3:00am
Jason Varitek can recall the first time that he was introduced to the power of David Ortiz. It wasn’t a pleasant memory.
Alex Speier
05/22/2011 - 12:55am
Mindful of the predictions of an apocalypse on Saturday night, Red Sox manager Terry Francona offered a bit of gallows humor in digesting the defeat.
Alex Speier
05/21/2011 - 3:00am
In another scenario, Adrian Gonzalez could have been making his first visit to Fenway Park on Friday night.
Alex Speier
05/20/2011 - 7:39am
The game itself was crazy enough.
Alex Speier
05/18/2011 - 12:00am
All along, there was the great unknown.

NEW YORK — At one level, a look at the Red Sox rotation would suggest mediocrity.
Alex Speier
05/15/2011 - 9:00am
NEW YORK – The remarkable run of Adrian Gonzalez added a new chapter on Saturday night.
Alex Speier
05/14/2011 - 8:00am
NEW YORK – The end result is what is visible, and it is extraordinary. The swing of Adrian Gonzalez is something to behold, the barrel of the bat whipping through the zone to the point of impact with a natural upper-cut that sends balls soaring towards the outer reaches of a ballpark.
Alex Speier
05/10/2011 - 2:14am
On Tuesday, Jose Iglesias will set foot in Canada for the first time since he made the decision that changed his life and set him on a path to Fenway Park.
Alex Speier
05/08/2011 - 7:52am
For the Twins, the decision was straightforward. When a rain delay exceeds 45 minutes, Minnesota pulls its pitcher from the game. It’s not a decision that’s subject to discretion. It’s policy. And so, after the skies opened at 1:53 p.m., the Twins had a bright line as to when they would consider starter Brian Duensing’s day concluded.
Alex Speier
05/07/2011 - 8:49am
Roughly 20 percent of the baseball season has now been played, and the Red Sox have been a below-.500 team for every day of the 2011 campaign.
Alex Speier
05/06/2011 - 8:00am
It is early, and so there is a danger in drawing sweeping conclusions about the return on investment of any deals from this past offseason. That said, on Thursday the Red Sox offered further reminders of why costly free agent signings are such a suspect way to build a bullpen.
Alex Speier
05/04/2011 - 9:03am
One week seems like the distant past for Adrian Gonzalez.
Alex Speier
05/03/2011 - 2:23am
That Jered Weaver is now one of the top pitchers in the game is beyond dispute. The towering right-hander finished fifth in AL Cy Young voting in 2010 in a season in which he led the league in punchouts and had a 3.01 ERA.
