About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

A case can be made that the Red Sox' most significant question mark this offseason is at catcher. Of the four needs (catcher, first base, shortstop, center field) created through their 2013 regulars who reached free agency, catcher is the one without a clear in-house solution as an option.

It's a lot of money. In some respects, it's hard to imagine that a player could walk away from a one-year, $14.1 million offer without batting an eye.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia rode the fast track from his selection out of high school as a first-round pick in the 2003 draft to the big leagues in 2007. Yet while his talent permitted him to move at a startling pace through the Braves farm system, making his big league debut on his 22nd birthday, there was an obstacle in his path that ultimately proved insurmountable.

An extraordinary season and team now will yield to change. It's part of the gig, an inevitability of how team-building and roster management works in the era of free agency, even for a Red Sox team that in 2013 proved one that seemed to fit together so seamlessly both on and off the field, with a striking number of players performing at something approximating the peak of their abilities.

You can call it luck, you can call it magic, you can call it a sense of purpose or determination or alchemy or chemistry -- but know that it was something.

The Improbable Dream became reality on Wednesday night at 11:22 p.m., when the 2013 Red Sox became the unlikeliest title winners in franchise history when closer Koji Uehara struck out Matt Carpenter to close out a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals, thus concluding a six-game World Series triumph.

ST. LOUIS -- It has now been a bit more than 11 years since Jon Lester became the first player drafted under the current Red Sox ownership group in 2002. Then, the 18-year-old was a young high school pitcher with shoot-the-moon potential whom the team's amateur scouts hoped might one day anchor a championship-caliber rotation.

ST. LOUIS -- "Now we go. Now we go."  Those were the words Jonny Gomes beamed about two hours before Game 4 of the World Series, as he commenced the shifting of gears that represented the change of mindset and preparation from being a reserve for the contest to being summoned into starting duty.

Present and future collided in spectacular fashion for the Red Sox on Saturday, in a manner that not only secured the team's entry to the World Series but also laid the cornerstone of the coming Era of Xander.

Could it be that the winner of the American League Championship Series will have been decided in the third-base coach's box? Or, perhaps, in the form of the lumbering slugger who proved the superior baserunner?

DETROIT -- When the Tigers amassed five runs in the second inning against the Red Sox, the rally represented a cold splash of water to the face.

DETROIT -- Yes, Miguel Cabrera is injured. He is a wounded Tiger, dealing with an injury to his left leg that has him visibly limping at times, contributing to a stretch from Aug. 27 through the first four games of the ALDS in which he had just two extra-base hits.

It had been nine years since David Ortiz turned the 2004 postseason into an unprecedented and unforgettable assertion of October greatness, an autumn statement so dramatic that it still resonates now. Yet the idea of the Red Sox DH as an embodiment of October excellence, particularly in pivotal late-game situations, was just that -- an idea or memory, rather than a recent reality.
