About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

The head-spinning deals of Thursday now behind them, the Red Sox now have a third of a season left to play. The next two months offer a crucial window for evaluation as the team looks to position itself to contend in 2015.

Forest through the trees.  This moment isn't about trading Jon Lester. This moment is about Jon Lester.
Alex Speier
07/28/2014 - 3:49am
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It is difficult to comprehend the place where the Red Sox have arrived. The dynamic surrounding the team bears no resemblance to what was accomplished -- and how it was accomplished -- last year.
Alex Speier
07/26/2014 - 9:03am
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Red Sox don't get -- and don't want -- too many chances at this. A team whose performance has raised a giant, neon SELL sign has a rare midyear opportunity to use the trade market to address needs for the future.
Alex Speier
07/18/2014 - 7:35am
Contention for the Red Sox seems hard to fathom.
Alex Speier
07/16/2014 - 9:50am
MINNEAPOLIS -- The latest stop of the Derek Jeter farewell tour left players shaking their heads. Who can imagine the Yankees without Jeter at shortstop?
Alex Speier
07/15/2014 - 4:00am
MINNEAPOLIS -- Risk goes both ways.
Alex Speier
07/14/2014 - 9:13am
MINNEAPOLIS -- Rarely for the Red Sox has the showcase event known as the All-Star Futures Game assumed such literal significance.
Alex Speier
07/11/2014 - 9:34am
There are few catching prospects in recent years who take such complete control of a game from behind the plate as Christian Vazquez. He is a presence behind the dish, someone whose leadership with a pitching staff and whose game-changing throwing arm and technical expertise behind the plate thanks to tremendously quick feet command notice.
Alex Speier
07/09/2014 - 7:28am
Finality and melancholy punctuated Jake Peavy's sentences. Less than a year after the Red Sox acquired him to round out a championship-caliber roster, the pitcher expressed his acceptance of what now seems the all-but-inevitable end of his time in Boston.
Alex Speier
07/08/2014 - 8:18am
The deficiency is obvious. The solution is not.
Alex Speier
07/06/2014 - 9:36am
With their double header split on Saturday, the Red Sox ensured that they'll spend the All-Star break staring at a losing record.
Alex Speier
07/03/2014 - 3:07am
Those who criticized the notion of The Bridge rarely discussed the alternative.  This is life without The Bridge that former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein described back in 2009.
Alex Speier
07/02/2014 - 8:16am
This was the worst (Part 1): It is a scoreless tie, two outs, bottom of the fourth inning with A.J. Pierzynski up and first base open. The Cubs elect to walk Pierzynski (armed with a .252 average, .281 OBP and .353 slugging mark entering Tuesday) intentionally in order to bring Xander Bogaerts to the plate, likely the first such indignity in the 21-year-old's life.
Alex Speier
06/30/2014 - 8:33am
NEW YORK -- On the day that Dustin Pedroia signed his Red Sox-for-life contract, principal owner John Henry evoked a notion to which he'd been introduced by his former manager. "Tito used to say, 'If I had nine Dustins, we'd win every game,' " Henry mused.
Alex Speier
06/29/2014 - 9:43am
NEW YORK -- He's here. Now what?
Alex Speier
06/28/2014 - 8:11am
NEW YORK -- Reminder: The Red Sox had the best offense in baseball in 2013, and it wasn't even close. But that now seems like a lifetime ago.
Alex Speier
06/27/2014 - 8:52am
Let's get to this first: It's a matter of when, not if. And that when could be very, very soon.
Alex Speier
06/18/2014 - 7:14am
In many ways, Jackie Bradley Jr. became the Red Sox' everyday center fielder by default. The Red Sox simply lacked a viable alternative.
Alex Speier
06/17/2014 - 12:11am
The ERA leaders among Red Sox starters? Is the group fronted by its Cy Young winner? Any of the four starters who have pitched in All-Star games? The lefty with outrageous career strikeout totals?  No. No. No.
Alex Speier
06/14/2014 - 7:04am
The Red Sox won 10-3, in an offensive explosion that left virtually every member of the team in good spirits. Except, perhaps, for one.
Alex Speier
06/12/2014 - 7:20am
BALTIMORE -- It is difficult to offer proper context for how bad the Red Sox offense has been. General manager Ben Cherington suggested on Tuesday that the Sox "just haven't clicked offensively," but that hardly does justice to the depths of the team's struggles.
Alex Speier
06/11/2014 - 9:18am
BALTIMORE -- It was by design, not coincidence.
Alex Speier
06/10/2014 - 8:10am
BALTIMORE -- For the Red Sox rotation, the present is a question mark and an even more uncertain future looms.
