About Alex Speier

Before he joined WEEI.com, Alex covered the Red Sox for several New England and national publications, including the New Hampshire Union Leader, Boston Metro, Boston Herald and Baseball America. Alex graduated from Harvard, where he served as the captain of the debate team, an experience that has been of surprisingly little use in press boxes across the country.

COLUMNS
Alex Speier
03/26/2012 - 10:04pm
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jose Iglesias is better than he was a year ago. Of that there is no question.
Alex Speier
03/25/2012 - 6:39am
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Catching is not so much a profession as a vocation or a calling. Perhaps more than any other responsibility in baseball, it is one defined by selflessness.
Alex Speier
03/24/2012 - 7:45am
SARASOTA, Fla. – The next two days could go a long way in defining the shape of the 2012 Red Sox season-opening rotation.
Alex Speier
03/22/2012 - 3:00am
BRADENTON, Fla. -- The tone of Red Sox spring training this year is unquestionably different. That is a direct reflection of the standards articulated by the new Boston manager and the approach he takes to pursuing them.
Alex Speier
03/21/2012 - 7:14am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox have passed the halfway point in spring training, with roughly three weeks of exhibition games behind them and roughly two more remaining prior to the April 5 season opener against the Tigers in Detroit.
Alex Speier
03/20/2012 - 6:58am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The non-drama of the Red Sox pitching plans for Opening Day is now past.
Alex Speier
03/17/2012 - 8:00am
This year is different for Jose Iglesias.
Alex Speier
03/16/2012 - 6:05am
Few pitchers pose the sort of philosophical inquiries that the Red Sox must wrestle in the case of Alfredo Aceves. Who is he? What is he? What is his essence? Where is his value?
Alex Speier
03/14/2012 - 5:49pm
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When Jon Lester was emerging as a Red Sox prospect, one of his minor league coaches, Al Nipper, offered an interesting compare-and-contrast exercise.
Alex Speier
03/13/2012 - 6:32am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The description was unusual.
Alex Speier
03/12/2012 - 12:00am
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Jon Lester and Aaron Cook were aware that they would be pitching in the same game on Sunday.
Alex Speier
03/11/2012 - 9:36am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It is, said Bobby Valentine, the most befuddling aspect of the Red Sox roster. There is no part of the team that has many question marks as the bullpen.
Alex Speier
03/10/2012 - 9:43am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- This is the seventh and potentially final spring training for Michael Bowden as a member of the Red Sox.
Alex Speier
03/08/2012 - 1:41am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- He never wanted to play professional baseball before his 19-year big league career. He is the 59-year-old father of newborn twins. He is paid to analyze the mechanics of throwing a baseball yet does not like to discuss them. Meet Bob McClure, the new Red Sox pitching coach.
Alex Speier
03/06/2012 - 6:44pm
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Daniel Bard was once a starter, but that now seems like a lifetime ago.
Alex Speier
02/29/2012 - 7:58am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The question gave Bobby Valentine pause. He considered it, but after a few moments of reflection, a definitive answer eluded him.
Alex Speier
02/28/2012 - 8:38am
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The end is now all but official for Jason Varitek, the only remaining act of his illustrious Red Sox career being the formality of the announcement of his retirement on Thursday.
Alex Speier
02/26/2012 - 4:53am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Because last year ended with humiliation, this year has begun with humility.
Alex Speier
02/24/2012 - 7:58am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- What kind of workload can Daniel Bard handle? That question looms over his potential relocation from the bullpen to the rotation.
Alex Speier
02/21/2012 - 7:14am
FORT MYERS – In a sense, the momentous task facing Bob McClure began even before he was named the Red Sox pitching coach on in late-December, just days before Christmas.
Alex Speier
02/19/2012 - 7:51am
FORT MYERS – The story of Tim Wakefield’s career is one that has relevant echoes for the 2012 Red Sox.
Alex Speier
02/18/2012 - 9:00am
FORT MYERS -- As he enters retirement following a 19-year major league career that netted 200 victories, there are any number of ways to understand the career of Tim Wakefield.
Alex Speier
02/17/2012 - 8:36am
FORT MYERS -- The issue is not the unsettled shape of the Red Sox pitching staff.
Alex Speier
02/16/2012 - 9:31am
FORT MYERS -- One of the most intriguing players to watch in Red Sox spring training this year will have virtually no shot at starting the season in the major leagues.
