The Soldier Field crowd booed the Bears after they fell behind 14-0 at halftime, a reaction offensive lineman Kyle Long deemed inappropriate.
“I don’t know if ‘upset’ is the word I would use,” Long said. “As somebody that is blood, sweat and tears in this locker room like the other guys, the coaches, the trainers, the staff and the equipment guys, to be getting booed at home when you’re walking off the field down two possessions is unacceptable — especially when there is not a lot of noise being made on third down [when Miami had the ball], period.”
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
Tight end Marcellus Bennett was more understanding, especially considering Chicago now is 0-3 at home.
“If I go see a bad movie, I boo,” Bennett said. “It’s an entertainment business. We are all entertainers. If you go to a bad show, most people boo. I think they had the right to do that. If I want to boo at fans, I can boo at fans, or whoever it may be. They pay for their tickets, and the show wasn’t up to their liking.
“If I go to a movie, I walk out if I don’t like the movie. Like ‘Transformers 3′ — it was terrible. I didn’t stay for the whole film and walked out.”
Tarpischev, who also was fined $25,000, had appeared on a Russian television talk show and referred to the Williams sisters as “brothers” and added, “It’s scary when you really look at them.”
He later said that he had no “malicious intent” and that his quotes on the “humorous show” were taken out of context. He said of the suspension: “I can’t comment. I don’t understand it.”
Said Williams on Sunday: “I think the WTA did a great job of taking [the] initiative and taking immediate action to his comments. I thought they were very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist at the same time. I thought they were in a way bullying.”
Russian star Maria Sharapova criticized Tarpischev’s comments as well.
“I think they were very disrespectful and uncalled for, and I’m glad that many people have stood up, including the WTA,” she said. “It was very inappropriate, especially in his position and all the responsibilities that he has not just in sport, but being part of the Olympic committee.”
– Saturday night’s college football showdown between Notre Dame and Florida State ended in controversy, as the Irish’s go-ahead touchdown with 13 seconds remaining was called back due to an offensive pass interference call, and they were unable to get back to the end zone in the 31-27 setback.
A day later, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly still was disappointed with the call, made for an apparent illegal pick that allowed Corey Robinson to cut to the outside and get open.
“Florida State blew the coverage and they got rewarded for it,” Kelly said Sunday. “So it’s unfortunate.”
Added Kelly: “I don’t know who saw it as interference, but you’ve got two guys that are trying to fight for space. We saw it as such.”
That said, Kelly acknowledged that his team could have done more earlier in the game to avoid being in the position it was.
“I mean, you’ve got to take the belt from the champion,” Kelly said. “You can’t leave it up to a decision that’s made at the end.”
ON THIS DAY TRIVIA (answer below): On Oct. 20, 1991, the Patriots beat the Vikings in overtime, 26-23, on a 42-yard field goal by which kicker who was in the final season of his four-year tenure with the team?
Christian's big takeaways from Thursday night's game was that the defense looked gassed, Geno Smith didn't play as poorly as we expected, and the O-Line played well despite injuries. Amendola's slight emergence was brought up. Brandon LaFell can't run a pick. And the Patriots need to pick up a linebacker and/or a veteran offensive lineman.
Pete had a ton of information and suggestions for this week. He gave out advice on Calvin Johnson, the Browns vs. Jacksonville, Jimmy Graham NOT starting, DeAndre Hopkins bouncing back, Sammy Watkins vs. the Vikings, Isaiah Crowell and the Patriots running backs who will fill in for Stevan Ridley.

Mut thinks Brady might be more healthy now than he has been all season. A healthy Rob Gronkowski opens up some breathing room for the other receivers. Like Danny Amendola, who caught his first touchdown.
