This is the clip the guys played on Dennis & Callahan with Minihane Thursday morning. Gerry basically called out the dentist who killed Ceclil the lion for being a complete jagoff, whereas Kirk had zero sympathy for Cecil by virtue of the fact that lions are scary and will eat you and there’s one less one in the world to worry about. I mean, more or less. Those are my words, not theirs but I think that’s a fair characterization.
I guess I come down somewhere in the middle. I don’t want to be a hypocrite. I support hunting and think hunters have a valuable role to play keeping animal populations controlled and protecting the wilderness and so on. And my all time favorite historical figure Teddy Roosevelt, in his post-presidential life, led a safari in Africa that literally killed 1,100 animals, including lions, rhinos, giraffes and elephants, one of whose heart Teddy ate as the bwana of the expedition.
So I’m reluctant to admire TDR while ripping Dr. Walter Palmer for not coming close to putting a dent in the animal kingdom the way the ol’ Bull Moose did. But then again, Roosevelt did it 100 years ago. Times change. Opinions evolve. Species get endangered (thanks in large part to the efforts of guys like Teddy Roosevelt). And I just can’t summon up any sympathy for a guy who flies halfway around the world to stick an arrow in the haunch of some majestic creature just for a good story to impress the cute hygenists at the next A-hole Dentists Trade Show.
One thing I think the morning show guys, you and I can all agree though, is that for Jimmy Kimmel to break down in tears over Cecil on national TV is not a good look. Sad though it was, this was a beast we’re talking about. He wasn’t Walter Cronkite reporting that President Kennedy was pronounced dead at Parkland Hospital. And I say this as a guy who can’t get through “Field of Dreams,” a video of a returning soldier surprising his kids or the DVD of Super Bowl XLIX without sobbing like I’ve been maced. I like Kimmel as much as the next guy, but he’s got to clean that up.
