In 2014, Pro Football Focus' Sam Monson famously wrote a piece saying Tom Brady was no longer a top-five quarterback in the NFL. Clearly, things have changed and Monson has taken back his take.

Appearing on the Not Sunday podcast with Ryan Hannable, Monson explained why he's taken back his take and why Brady is now considered the best quarterback in the NFL.

“Look, that whole article was based on the premise of a couple of numbers that were trending in the wrong direction for Tom Brady, for awhile," he said. "He was getting up there in age and his play in the face of pressure had been declining for a couple of seasons. He started that year really struggling on the back of this article. It kind of looked like he had been declining with his age and maybe with what was around him. At the time, I figured maybe we had seen the best of Tom Brady in the past. I was actually very careful when I wrote the piece not to say he was done, just that he was on the decline. It turned out neither of those things were true, so it is kind of splitting hairs.

"Really, we just saw from that infamous Chiefs game, it was such a disaster. He really bounced back and has been if anything, getting better since that point. It has really been phenomenal with what he’s been able to do since that time. What is amazing is the numbers that started off the whole thing, the numbers that formed the premise of all this, is completely reversed. Now, Tom Brady leads the NFL in passer rating under pressure, but like 10 points. Brady is not only playing the best football of his career, but I think he has improved all of the things that were trending in the wrong direction.”

Monson also discussed the Patriots defense, Rob Gronkowski and who can challenge the Patriots the rest of the year and in the playoffs.
