Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac on Mut at Night: Bud Dupree's comments about James Harrison unfair

December 28, 2017 - 9:58 pm

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac joined Mut at Night with Ken Laird filling in on Thursday to discuss the latest with the Steelers following James Harrison being released and signing in New England.

Dulac spoke to Harrison via phone Wednesday, which were his first comments since signing with the Patriots.

Earlier on Wednesday, Harrison's former teammates ripped him for the way things were handled in Pittsburgh and then going to the Patriots. Linebacker Bud Dupree was one of the most vocal players, saying Harrison was a bad example for the young linebackers and didn't help them, as well as saying he didn't visit Ryan Shazier in the hospital.

Dulac said Dupree's comments were out of line and untrue.

“I think their remarks were fueled and insighted by a story or two — once of which might have been mine — that was critical of the Steelers and Mike Tomlin’s handling of a player of that stature with such disrespect, and I think they felt compelled to come out and defend their coach and to tell the story," Dulac said. "I think in doing that their emotions got the best of them. Some of those things were extreme. Most of them came from Bud Dupree.

"I have a problem with that because you are talking about a guy who really has no ground to stand on when it comes to criticizing, if not ripping, James Harrison. Are you kidding me? I found some of his comments odd in that regard — that he didn’t mentor any of the younger linebackers, that he didn’t go to the hospital to visit Ryan Shazier with the other linebackers. That assassinates James Harrison’s character. … That wasn’t true. James Harrison not only visited Ryan Shazier [in the hospital], he was the guy the following week who came out on the field for pregame warmups not wearing a shirt to salute Shazier, who does that every game.

"When you say things like that, that’s a whole 'nother animal. That is the problem with what Bud Dupree said. Not only was it untrue, it was unfair.”
