Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore explains why he didn't practice on Tuesday

August 17, 2017 - 3:16 pm

On Tuesday, the first day of joint practices between the Patriots and Texans in West Virginia, Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore watched from the sidelines in full uniform because of a coaches decision.

Speaking to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe, Gilmore explained the absence on Wednesday.

“I just stayed out,” Gilmore said. “I felt like it was a good time. I had to listen to the coaches and whatever they wanted me to do. They wanted me to stay out, so I stayed out. I was just sitting back and observing, studying the game from the sideline, taking mental reps.”

Gilmore has been one of the Patriots' best defenders so far in training camp, which continued when he returned to the field Wednesday.

“Yeah for sure, coming out here and finally getting to go against some new guys, not your own receivers, it’s always fun to come out here and play your game, get fired up in one-on-ones and 7-on-7s. It’s fun,” Gilmore said. “They’ve got a lot of great players. They’re athletic. It’s good to come out here, not beat each other up, go against somebody else and try to learn how to play against them.”

It's unclear if he and the other starters will play Saturday night in the second preseason game.
