Tom Brady on K&C: It’s great to have Martellus Bennett back with Patriots

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined Kirk & Callahan Monday morning to discuss Sunday's big win over the Broncos and also to look ahead to the week in Colorado before next week's game against the Raiders in Mexico City. One of the biggest stories of the week for the Patriots was getting Martellus Bennett back, as the team claimed him off waivers Thursday. Bennett was active Sunday and while only playing seven snaps, he had three catches for 38 yards.

“I don’t think it was easy for him, but he put a lot of work in," Brady said. "He made some really good plays out there. It is pretty amazing to think that you can pick a player up on a [Thursday] and he can contribute on Sunday. Marty is smart. He really wanted to do a good job. He wasn’t in there on many plays, but when he was in there he was effective and it’s great to have him back. I felt that when he got back and it all worked out for our team. I felt like it could be a real positive knowing how talented he is. I have a lot of throws and big throws and big-time games built up with him. I have a lot of trust in him. Any time you have players like that on your team it just adds to it.”

The Patriots will stay in Colorado this week before Sunday's game in Mexico City and practice at Air Force. Brady said the team will try and replicate a normal week as much as they can, but will have team activities planned Tuesday and Friday.

“You try and replicate what you normally do," he said. "Today is just a normal Monday schedule for us. Tuesday is a normal Tuesday and then we just practice like normal Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Obviously, in a different location. I wouldn’t say there are many distractions out here. I think it’s a good opportunity for us to be out here together. No distractions except getting ready to play a game. That could be a real benefit for all of us if we take care of it. You might actually get a little bit of extra rest, or more time meeting. Just trying to have a real solid week so we can be ready to go. We leave Saturday for Mexico. We’re not there very long, but we have an important game and a big job to do. Hopefully we can all go out there and first have a great week of practice and then put it to work on Sunday.”

Going against a strong Denver defense, Brady was protected well even with starting right tackle Marcus Cannon missing the game. Brady finished 25-for-34 with 266 yards and three touchdowns.

“Our guys really stepped up to the challenge," Brady said. "Any Von Miller-led defense is going to be tough. I thought we did a great job playing more on our terms. When we ran the ball we ran it efficiently. Playing with the lead was really important. Our guys did a great job up front and really did a good job finishing runs, finishing plays and moving the pile. Even when two-yard gains became five-yard gains, we got some really critical runs at important times to be able to really keep us playing on our terms and keep them from really teeing off on the passer. Any time you play a team that has great rush and great coverage, you need to be able to run the ball well to keep them from teeing off on their pass rushing schemes and letting their best players do what they do best.”

Following are more highlights from the conversation. For more Patriots news, visit the team page.

On Rob Gronkowski's near touchdown catch ruled incomplete: “He felt like he made it. He said, ‘I’m sure I caught that.’ You know, sometimes when you play on the road you don’t get the benefit of some of the calls, something that is bang-bang. The reality is I should have made a better throw. I really don’t care how it was ruled, I should have made a better throw to him.”

On winning in Denver for second straight year: “I think there’s probably different places — it’s just been harder to win for one reason or another. This has been one place. I thought last year was a great win for us just because we hadn’t won there in awhile. Going in this year I think there was, ‘Hey, we do have more confidence to go in there and play really really well.’ Football is very much a game of execution and we executed in so many different areas last night. It really led to just a great performance by our team. Special teams really are a strength of ours. We put a lot of time into it. We have great players that play on all our kicking units. They came through huge last night, which really set up the offense and the defense. It was a great step coming off a bye. Last year we came off a bye and lost. This year it’s good to come off and win. We’re out here all week and we’re going to be challenged this week by another good team and hopefully we can go put together a similar type effort."
