Tom Brady on K&C: 'I wish we were 1-0, but we're not. We have to do something about it'

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined Kirk & Callahan on Monday to discuss Thursday's loss to the Chiefs and look ahead to Week 2 against the Saints. To listen to the complete interview, visit the Kirk & Callahan audio on demand page.

Following the blowout loss, Brady said the team lacked a winning attitude and competitiveness, which was pretty unusual for the quarterback to say. He further explained those comments.

“Well, I just felt like we needed to be better, obviously in a lot of areas," he said. "We played pretty competitively for three quarters and then just got away from us in the fourth quarter. Everyone has kind of had a chance to think about the game and think about what they need to do better. Hopefully we can get back to work this week.”

Brady added: “It’s execution, it’s attitude, it’s competitiveness, it’s urgency, it’s everything. We just have to do a better job. We played against a good football team, we just didn’t get the job done.”

The Patriots have lost the season opener three times since Brady has been with the team and in all three years the team went on to win the Super Bowl. He doesn't think there's any coorolation, but did say a loss like this can get a team more focused.

“I wouldn’t say so," he said. "Any time you lose I don’t think it is a great thing. I think you can learn a lot from every game. There’s definitely some losses you learn more from because you are critical in areas maybe you wouldn’t be critical had you won, or the emotion of the game, or the emotion of a win wouldn’t allow you to critically analyze something the way you would when you lose. Hopefully we can learn from all the different things that happened in the game and there were parts of the game where we were ahead and we really could have put the nail in the coffin so to speak and we didn’t do it and we got behind. We had a chance to come back and make some plays and we didn’t do it. Both those areas need to be improved upon.

"I think it is understanding how competitive all these games are. There’s no easy games. Every team is going to bring it, certainly against us. Every team has a lot of good players. I think Coach [Belichick] said leading up to the game all week, ‘Look, these guys can score on one play from anywhere. Whether that is on defense, offense or special teams. It’s just a dangerous team.' We had a chance to really take control of the game at different times. We had the opportunities, we just didn’t take advantage of them.”

With the game taking place on Thursday, Brady and the team had an extra three days to prepare for the Saints, which Brady said was tougher coming off a loss.

“It actually kind of sucked having three extra days to think about it and re-watch the game," he said. "The good thing about football season when it is Sunday to Sunday is Monday you watch it and by Tuesday you’re on to the next team. I have kind of moved on to the next team, but we haven’t really done that formally as a team. We’re doing that today. It kind of sucked. Maybe it is good to stick with us longer and make us continue to evaluate and nitpick and so forth.”

On missing Julian Edelman: “Yeah, I think we will feel that all year. He’s just one of those types of players and I think Danny [Amendola] was obviously having a great game and we went out. Malcolm [Mitchell], we’ve worked a lot with him and he was out. I think it is always about consistency, dependability. That is the challenge of a football season. You wish you were in midseason form, but you have a lot of new people you’re working with and you have to develop trust and create this urgency. They have to understand me and I have to understand them. The backs have to understand the line and vise-versa. It’s always a bit of a challenge and that is what we’re working hard for everyone to get up to speed on.”

On players getting caught up in 19-0 hype: “It’s a long season and I think it’s really a new team. There’s new players, a lot of new players. A lot of new schemes. Obviously, new opponents and challenges. New circumstances you are dealing with and you have to try and get this team to be as good as we can as quickly as we can. It’s a long marathon of a season. … I wish we were 1-0, but we’re not. We have to do something about it. It’s just part of the season. Mental toughness is a real thing. You have to be mentally tough to put aside the good things people say and the bad things that people say. It is a rollercoaster of emotions and if you get involved in that rollercoaster it’s probably more challenging.”

On going into broadcasting after playing career: “No, I can be sure of that. I don’t know. It’s never been something that I have been interested in doing.”
