FOXBORO -- Brandin Cooks was with the Saints for the first three years of his NFL career where he was fairly productive -- totaling 215 catches for 2,861 yards and 20 touchdowns.

While Cooks was productive in Sean Payton's offense, on a conference call Wednesday he noted Cooks has a bit of a different role with the Patriots.

"There's one difference, and simply he is playing more X, and he played more Z in New Orleans," Payton said. "That's left or right or weak or strong, he's playing in the same spots he played here. That would be the only thing. You see him getting down the field, you see him stretching the defense. He's someone you have to really pay attention to where he's at and stay on top of. He can run extremely well."

The wide out was used in motion a lot with the Saints, but hasn't with New England.

The Saints dealt Cooks to New England this offseason in exchange for the Patriots' first-round pick. Payton acknowledged he lost a great player, but with the number of productive receivers in New Orleans he was expendable.

"He's a great competitor, he comes to work every day with that intensity," he said. "Each rep, there's not really an off-speed rep for him. The way he prepares, I know he's a good teammate and well respected."

The two teams will face off Sunday in New Orleans with both teams entering the contest 0-1.
