Could Patriots be interested in WR Dez Bryant?

On Friday, after a meeting with the organization, the Cowboys reportedly released wide receiver Dez Bryant. The 29-year-old had a cap hit of over $16 million for the 2018 season and he certainly isn't the receiver he once was.

Of course, the first question on the minds of Patriots fans after hearing the news is could New England potentially be interested?

Certainly, but as is the case with most decisions, it depends on cost.

Even though the Patriots have a crowded receivers room as it is, they could make Bryant fit. Phillip Dorsett, Kenny Britt, Cordarrelle Patterson and Jordan Matthews aren't locks to make the roster by any means with their contracts, which give the Patriots the ability to cut them without much impact.

After three straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons from 2012-14, Bryant's production has dipped a bit in recent years. Playing in 16 games last year, he caught 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns.

Looking at all the money teams threw at wide receivers during free agency, it indicates Bryant could potentially cash in. It doesn't seem likely he will sign for a lot of years, but he could certainly get in the $6-8 million per season range. The only way the Patriots would be interested is if that cost went down to somewhere in say the $4 million per year range.

While it's fun to think about, don't count on Bryant coming to New England.
