Bill Belichick on return of Malcolm Mitchell: 'Good to see him back out there'

FOXBORO -- It has been a long season for Malcolm Mitchell, who has been on injured reserve since Week 1 with a lingering knee injury.

The second-year wide out returned to practice on Wednesday, as Patriots used him as the second of two players who could come off of injured reserve and return to the team this season. The team now has 19 days to activate him to the roster.

“It’s been a long road. We’ll see how it goes," Bill Belichick said Friday. "It’s been a long time since he’s played football, but good to see him back out there. We’ll see how it goes.”

The biggest thing when it comes to Mitchell is the amount of time he's missed. It may be harder for him to return to game action than someone who only missed a week or two.

“I think that is a little more of a question mark," Belichick said. "Just the amount of time — it’s been months. That’s a lot of time to make up in one or two practices.”

With that being said, earlier in the week it appeared the Patriots were expecting Mitchell to play Sunday.

On Wednesday, NBC Sports Boston's Mike Giardi said the Patriots will "take it day-by-day" with him, but believe he "has real chance" to make his season debut on Sunday.

New England will host the Jets Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.
