Red Sox report: Hanley Ramirez is following Tom Brady's lead

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Last September, during a late-season series in Baltimore, Hanley Ramirez was very anxious to show off his new way of working out. He ventured from the clubhouse into the weight room, emerging with the bands that had changed the way he was doing things. The bands, of course, were labeled with "TB12," signifying they were a product manufactured by Tom Brady's company.

Talking to the media Friday, Ramirez insinuated he not only hasn't stopped buying into the "TB12 Method" but has dove in even deeper.

"More bands. I went on the Tom Brady’s diet," Ramirez said. "I think it’s 100 percent, everything he says in the book and the work he does, it makes a lot of sense. ... You know, I read his book and it’s working for me. it’s working for me."

Gone are the heavy weights, with Ramirez having dropped 15 pounds while feeling -- wait for it -- more pliable than ever.

"My hips and swinging, hands are faster. It’s effortless. I feel good things," he said. "At the end of the day, you just sit down and think about changes you’ve got to make for next year and when you start doing that, you see the difference. The mind is telling you that it needs it.

"It’s just me. I think I'm a veteran guy and I know what I need to do to get better daily and through the year last year, I was thinking at the same time, I need to do this. You learn from the mistakes and when you do mistakes, you think about it or what’s going on and you try to fix it."

For Ramirez, the need for change was a perfect storm.

He is now 34 years old, coming off what he deemed a "terrible" season. The first baseman/designated hitter also had to undergo shoulder surgery after last season. For him, it all added up to the need for a closer look into how a 40-year-old Brady has managed to do his thing.

"When you’re young, you need the big muscles to get stronger," Ramirez noted. "When you get in that age past 30, you’ve got to concentrate on the little muscles. You get that power from the big muscles. When you get hurt, most of the time those little muscles stop working. So you’ve got to keep working on those little muscles, which is what those bands do. They give you resistance and keep the little muscles working.

"The good thing about Tom Brady is winning. He’s about winning and making his team better. When you’ve got a guy like that, who inspires people to get better and to show to others that age is just a number when you do the little things right, that’s what he does."

Ramirez believes when it comes to professional athletes, the perception of age is going to be changing -- thanks in large part to the Patriots quarterback.

"That’s going to change with what Brady does," he said. "Like I say, when you get in that age, little muscles stop working. It’s why it’s a little bit harder for you to produce. Now the big muscles work on top of the little muscles and don’t let the little muscles do work. You lose a lot of strength and you get hurt. I think a lot of players are going to start doing that now. I see it at the gym where I go. They’re doing that a lot – a lot of bands."
