The Red Sox haven't spent the winter sitting around waiting for J.D. Martinez to decide whether or not to accept their five-year, $125 million offer. They've been seeking contingencies.

Among them: Indians slugger Edwin Encarnacion.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox and Indians earlier this offseason discussed a deal that would've brought Encarnacion to Boston, but the Red Sox balked at including center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

Encarnacion has long been considered a perfect fit for Fenway Park, a right-handed slugger with prodigious power who routinely crushes the Red Sox. His 30 home runs against them are the most he has hit against any team except the Orioles (36).

He showed interest in the Red Sox last offseason, but it was not reciprocated, so he signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the Indians before mashing 38 homers with 107 RBIs.
