Offseason rolls on in painfully slow fashion, and Dave Dombrowski explains why Red Sox still haven't made a move

In short order, the offseason is going to give way to the actual season. Will the Red Sox have made any moves?

Speaking to reporters at the Boston Baseball Writers Dinner on Thursday, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said the hunt for talent continues, but nothing is imminent.

With the Yankees adding Giancarlo Stanton and the Astros acquiring Gerrit Cole, the two best teams in the American League have seemingly put even more distance between themselves and the Red Sox, who have reportedly made a five-year, $100 million offer to free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez as part of a surprisingly slow market for top-end talent.

"We won 93 games here with basically the team we have coming back and some guys coming back healthy," Dombrowski told reporters. "I think some guys will have stronger years. I've learned the predictive nature of the game is not something I partake in very much. I've been with clubs who've been the favorites by far and haven't done quite as well and not the favorites and have done quite well. So you let those things take care of themselves. But for our situation we'll keep working at it, but I do think we have a good club no matter what."

One point Dombrowski wanted to make is that he's not saving this year's resources to make a run at next year's hypothetical free agents, a class which could include All-Stars Bryce Harper and Manny Machado.

"How do I know I can sign somebody next year?" Dombrowski asked. "And when people talk about the free agent class of next year, which has got some premium guys, I don't know who will be free agents until next year because of who gets signed in the meantime. So there's no guarantees in that regard. That's not our strategy, to put it that way, at this point. Could it happen? Yeah, I guess you could, but that's not our strategy at this point. I would like to strengthen our club this year if we could."
