Dustin Pedroia took his first steps towards a return to the Red Sox, going 1-for-3 with a single and fielding his only chance cleanly in five innings with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

Pedroia is still rehabbing following cartilage restoration surgery on his left knee last October. He came out of Monday's performance feeling good about his progress.

"After I got out there in the first inning I didn't think about my knee one time," Pedroia told reporters in Pawtucket. "That's when you kind of know you're good. So just continue going. Hopefully tomorrow I feel better than I did today and get after it.

"I'm fine now," Pedroia added. "I don't have any issues. I think the work that we put in to get to this point, that's the reason why. You're going to see the same guy you've seen play for however many years I've played."

That said, Pedroia makes no secret that this surgery was the roughest of his career.

"It's a pretty tough surgery to have," he said. "But it's kind of the cards you're dealt. You don't plan on certain things happening. So if they do happen, you just have to try to do the best you can, try to rehab better or do things in other aspects if you can't play."

The biggest challenge was running. Pedroia said he had one setback that shut him down for about a week, but otherwise he's right on target. After surgery, the team announced that Pedroia would be sidelined until Memorial Day.

"Our training staff has kind of mapped out a plan of what we're trying to do, and I've followed it every step," Pedroia said. "Every now and then I'll give them my input on an exercise or things like that, but as (for) a time frame, it's been what's been mapped out from the Red Sox and the doctor that did my surgery. That's been it. Whatever they've told me to do I try to attack that. This is the part where I'm supposed to start playing. So, I'm here."
